12 Songs and the beginning of a great NEW American Songbook.
*****************
"Christine's Refrigerator" is John Margolis' debut CD, and also introduces the formidable writing team of John Margolis and Don Rosler. On this CD, they have created a beautiful and original songbook that fully displays their talents as songwriters and producers and John's gifts as a vocalist, arranger and pianist.
This CD is unique in sound and sensibility. There is a strong classical texture, with shades of influences that include Randy Newman, Tony Bennett, Stephen Foster, Poulenc, Kurt Weill, Edith Piaf, Astor Piazzola, Chopin and Tom Waits.
The "sneak preview" version of "Christine's Refrigerator" has already garnered an impressive bandwagon of fans on NPR, who heard the "sneak preview" version on the "Jonathan Schwartz Show," and who also heard the title track featured on NPR's "All Things Considered" (as part of the Kitchen Sister's "Hidden Kitchens" series). 2 songs from this CD have already been prominently featured in films, including one on Showtime/HBO.

The Best
author: pat murrayThis CD was everything that I anticipated.. Tanta Belleza is one of my favorite songs!! Thanks cdbaby for such a great job getting it to me!
Heard it on CNN. SO MUCH BEAUTY!
author: KyleAnd was reminded what a wonderful CD it is. Got it last year via NPR but hearing "Tanta" after the film blew me away again. This CD is a one of a kind treasure.
BEAUTIFUL
author: CD BABYI like this style, the music and very much the words, especially "Tanta Belleza" which it was the reason I bought the CD. The delivery service was very unique, nice e-mail that I previosly received; fast and no problems at all. I highly recommend to buy from them.
Ecclectic, Poignant & even a wee bit Magical
author: Aunt LeesieIf you're throwing a dinner party and you want to wow your guests with unique melodies which are sure to spark interest, add this CD to your collection. At once timeless and ageless, each track is unique in style. A little wine... a little food... a little song... fantastic!
Extra special
author: Jamie AllenCame across you music on radio this past week and investigated further. Extra-special and the kind of song and vocal style and effect I love, in the tradition of Lyle Loveet, Tom Waits, Randy Newman, Rufus Wainwright and Nilson.
Straight from the heart, & will go straight to yours
author: John ProctorHey I'm not a critic just a listener but this CD is outtasight. I heard a little Satchmo, a little Tom Waits, a lotta honest emotion...I love it! Listen close or just let it play in the background, either way it delights the soul. Definitely something you don't hear every day!
I have my father's picture on up on my refrigerator
author: John ProvinsalHow does one express the love and loneliness of a parent, now removed and slightly irrelevant to the lives of your children and awaiting the death you saw your slightly irrelevant parents die before you? Thank you
Heard it on "All Things Considered" on NPR. Floored me Evocative and Bittersweet
Evocative and bittersweet. Almost like my Mom's refrigerator door. The song brought back alot of memories on many levels. Heard it on the Kitchen Sisters segment and then later on the local NPR outlet and it floored me.
Beautifully eccentric, achingly romantic, wonderfully written, perfectly crafted
author: Mick LeonardAn incredible and moving piece of work on every level. Great songs, great arrangements great performances by John Margolis and all involved. On a par with the best work of Randy Newman, Tom Waits, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Paul Simon and even the Gershwins. A unique voice which must be heard. I am stunned!
Fabulously evocative
author: derek o'connorIt sinks into the bones and stays with you. Beautiful words. Great tone. Perfect for those rainy days and starry nights.
Very very moving
author: Rick Jensen/NPR listenerVery very moving. Not sure I've heard songs quite like these. Especially moved by "Christines Refrigerator", "I Happen To Be Free" "Here's the Plan" and "Good With Speeches". More recently "You Think You Know Someone" growing on me more and more. This is a serious CD. Sad. Soulful. Love the vocals. Amazing lyrically. Good work and best wishes with it.
After hearing the title track locally in NYC, I knew it was for me!
author: Eileen PettusAnd, wow, was I right. The voice, the poetry, the music are each outstanding...thanks to Jonathan Schwartz on WNYC, I am a believer in Mr. Margolis, forever.
tin pan alley meets brill building
author: po' hankthe title track is plain devastating. "here's something you don't see everyday" is something latter day elvis costello would have given his left nut to have written. "everyone's in love with the wrong person" touches on kurt weill territory & makes you wonder when margolis & rosler will get around to writing that big musical. as for the rest? like tom waits' closing time, this album seeks to establish a particular mood. if you're a fan of rickie lee jones, burt bacharach or even elvis costello's latest, this one's for you.
Great Song!
author: Arif Mardin"Christine's Refrigerator" is a wonderful song written and sung by the very talented John Margolis.
Astonished by the combination of intelligence... depth of feeling and wit...
author: Bart Midwood--author, The World in Pieces, Bennett's AngelI am astonished by the combination of intelligence, technical competence, depth of feeling and wit -- four qualities rarely found in the same package. "Christine's", "Free" and "Good With Speeches" made me weep.
“Christine’s Refrigerator” is filled with lovely, soulful, delicious art.
author: Hugh PrestwoodThis is a marvelous CD. Besides John’s remarkable vocals, every song was a miniature voyage to someplace I’d never been before. “Christine’s Refrigerator” is filled with lovely, soulful, delicious art.
makes my eyeliner run
author: Bruce HornsbyJohn Margolis' music makes my eyeliner run.
In a class by itself, brilliant all the way
author: Alain MalletSometimes funny, often heart breaking, always brilliant, Christine's Refrigerator is a welcome reminder that high art and popular song form can be great bedfellows. John Margolis has put together a collection of songs that are so fresh and original, I feel like my ears just received a big jolt of innocence. Superb all the way!
Timeless, beautiful work.
author: Alex CohenTimeless, beautiful work. As strong as Newman, Waits or any of those folks mentioned in the quotes.
Experiencing "Christine's Refrigerator" is one great adventure.
author: Bob TelsonThese songs tell amazing stories, in the music as well as the lyrics. At once accessible and totally original, heart-felt and daring, romantic but unwearily world-wise, all conveyed with Margolis' grittily elegant voice. This is the 1st CD I play my friends to take them on a great adventure. Bob Telson
