notes
A native of Baltimore, John is proof that you don't have to be from Chicago to have the blues in you. "I grew up on the East Coast playing blues," says Marx, "I remember the early 60s...I was a folk singer but I was also into Leadbelly, Mississippi John Hurt, B.B. King (as well as) Nat (King) Cole." Drums were his first instrument but he switched to guitar at age 14. When he got out of the Navy, John settled in San Diego, recorded an album for Decca with his band The Daddios, then formed a band called Nova, which fast became one of the hottest bands in San Diego. "We'd do blues and all the Afro-Cuban musics." After moving to L.A. in 1978, John took what might have been considered a 180 degree turn, joining Captain & Tennille, who were looking for a singing guitarist. Over the years, John has played/toured or recorded with blues luminaries such as Jimmy Witherspoon, Larry Davis, Earl King, Floyd Dixon, Albert Collins, Lowell Fulson and Lightning Hopkins and the late William Clarke. In fact, the recent CD and DVD of William Clarke live in Germany features John on guitar and vocals! He also appears on over a dozen Jimmy Morello productions for JSP Records and on the CD "Wake Up & Worry by Mitch Kashmar for DeltaGroove Productions. Rest assured. John's 2002 CD "...With A Feeling" is 100% blues in all its shades. "We play All-American music," insists Marx. "It's blues of course, but we also incorporate jazz, rhythm & blues and traditional rock'n'roll." But don't take our word for it: "Singer/Guitarist John Marx mixes styles: swing, shuffle, funk and more on "With A Feeling." A distinctive soloist, Marx swaps licks with harmonica aces Tetsuya Nakamura and Michael Fell, backed by a teriffic rhythm section. Much of the soloing boasts a jazz flavor. Everyone here are great players but Marx is phenomonal. His solos are beautifully composed. Highly recommended!" Jeff Calvin Blues Revue Magazine. So there you have it. Check out "With A Feeling" and see why John insists that Blues is medicine for what ails ya!

You don't need sight to see the soul of John Marx; it's in his music
author: Kody L. CullumI could be walking, cane in hand, down Ventura Blvd., or strolling down Powell Str. in San Francisco where I currently reside, and if I were to hear that wonderfully-smooth and expressive voice, matched equally with that perfectly-balanced guitar-playing, I would know it to be John. So many times I have had the pleasure of seeing this idolitary figure play live, as I sat in the audience, observing the talent that radiates from the stage to all who are present. The irony, of course, is that, since I have no sight whatsoever, I would simply have to, in John's words, "move with a feeling". This CD does just that. Indeed, there seems to be no difference between John's playing live, or his recordings, for his gift is absorbed by ear and by soul, respectively. I highly recommend any blues, jazz, and R&B enthusiast to add this masterpiece to their collection, for its routes completely exemplify the bloodline of blues--feeling and soul.
As the Stars say "5 Stars"

Greatest swinging shuffle in years to come!
author: Blind Boy Bastro, Radio Laus 96.9MHz, Dubrovnik, CroatiaAs far as I am concerned John Marx is one of those surprises you get in music business when you say: "Well, this guy is something else, ain't?". Shuffle and jazzy kind of songs are my favorites, particularly "Every since I was a child" and greatest impression he did on me is cut of "As the years go passing by". Not everyone cuts this songs as it should be cut. Not everyone should be playing this song. John Marx's should include it in every gig.
The perfect addition to my CD collection...
author: DianaDim the lights... Pour a Tangueray and tonic (with extra lime)... Curl up with your partner... And mellow out to the smooth sounds of John Marx... The snare drum sends me to a blues joint immediately... Keep the sounds coming, Paul and gang...
John Marx is the Encyclopedia Britannica of Blues-Jazz Guitar!
