Album Notes

"If all she has is you" is featured on the DVD/CD Celtic Origins which is available exclusively at all Borders Shops in the USA.

"Genteel harmonies and quiescent aural landscapes/reminiscent of Art Garfunkel during his "Bright Eyes" days/the absolute beauty of a handful of the dozen self-penned songs/Nick Drake would surely smile at the irony of a revival of such delicacy in the maw of the tiger/but McGlynn's strongest hand is the sophistication in his writing particularly on "In Your Eyes", with its Cole Porter romance"
Hot Press Magazine

"The instrumentation in particular is outstanding and McGlynn possesses a voice that does justice to lyrics that are clearly personal"
In Dublin Magazine

"He sings with a clear and very beautiful voice, not far from Art Garfunkel."
Gothenburg Post, Sweden (Live)

Officially released in 2005 his debut album Songs for a Fallen Angel was compared favourably to the vocal and guitar stylings of Nick Drake, Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel, though a more recent comparison to Jose Gonzalez might be more appropriate. The songs range from achingly sad love songs (Face the Wall/If all she has is you) to a joyful celebration of an Irish childhood (Swimming in the Barrow) from the trippy, dreamy "Fisher King" to the Cole Porteresque "In your eyes". The diverse styles are held together by McGlynn’s distinctive gentle vocals and unique guitar playing. There's very little to complicate these songs by way of over-production apart from percussion and some beautiful string arrangements.

John co-directs the cult Irish group Anuna and has worked with Elvis Costello, Jeff Buckley, Sinead O'Connor and Moya Brennan. In 2005 his vocal arrangement of "Fionnghuala" appeared on the "The Chieftains: Live from Dublin: A Tribute to Derek Bell" and sang with Sting on the Grammy-winning "The long Black Veil". He featured on Jerry Fish's Meteor Irish Music Award winning album "Be Yourself" on backing vocals with Damien Rice. His work has appeared on most of Anuna's 10 studio albums. The first track on "Songs for a Fallen Angel"-"If all she has is you", was covered on Owen Brady's debut album "Prepare to be happy" released April 2008 by Sony BMG. In 2008 he appeared as special guest at Cork Opera house and The Olympia theatre Dublin for the recently re-formed legendary Irish band Moving Hearts.

Two songs from this album really stand out for me, Swimming in the Barrow and If I Looked Any Better. Both invoked memories, reminding me of that perfect day with friends (Swimming) and then a wry grin about people I've known (If I looked). All the songs are well done, the melodies interesting and clear (The Fisher King is a very good example). Listen to Songs for a Fallen Angel, and see what calls out to your own emotions and experiences.

When I heard "If All She Has Is You" on Anúna's PBS special I was blown away, and even more so when I heard it performed live. John McGlynn has a heavenly voice and his songs paint a rich tapestry of youth, love, and love lost. My favorite song, and it's hard to pick just one, is "She Took My Hand." Whenever I hear it, I think of "The Story In Your Eyes" by the Moody Blues, and I love the Moody Blues. I have yet to take this CD out of my changer. "Songs For A Fallen Angel" is definitely one of my Top 10 CD's. I truly can't say enough good things about it. I highly recommend this CD.

A friend of mine, when talking about our favorite albums we had found randomly, brought this to my attention. I found McGlynn on Myspace and was awed. I immediately ordered the album and was not let down in the least. His voice, his lyrics, his music: all of it is truly beautiful!
