notes

These are our Blues, we sing 'em as we please. We have been playing this Blues music with each other for close to ten years. Individually, we have been doing it much longer--decades. Like many players, we've attempted to hear and absorb as much as we could from the masters who preceded us. When you work in a style in which so many definitive statements have been made, though, the question arises, "What do you have to add to what's alread been said?". The music on this CD is our answer to that question.

We've shied away from recreations of historic recordings for a number of reasons, but primarily because we're interested in seeing what there is to say in this music now, speaking in our own voices. What speaks to us in this music? A memorable lyric, a strong melody, being right there when you sing, an instrument's wordless moan. We hope that our way of singing and playing these Blues speaks to you.

  • Only steal from the best! A comprehensive primer for aspiring blues players.
    author: Stanislove

I know Orville has certainly paid his dues, and by the sound of this album, so have his colleagues, John and Grant. For this acoustic folk-blues-pop journeyman's money, these guys have laid down some of the most exquisite and ballsy tracks of acoustic blues and Americana anyone has heard in a while. They're not just some fussy old white men doing museum pieces - they have lived this music for a long time, and it shows. David Lange's clear recording, seemingly devoid of effects and featuring well separated instruments, puts the final gloss on this fine addition to your blues library. Us musicians are a notoriously cheap lot, always wanting to trade CDs rather than spend money, but I was happy to pay retail for this one!

  • Tasteful, soulful, relaxed, great swing
    author: Tom Nice

Conveys beautifully the sense of being in the room with these three master players. Atmospheric recording. Vituoso but selfless playing - a musical conversation. Vibrant mandolin, mellow intricate guitar, insinuating harmonica by a master of tone. This is one great album.

  • Another roots masterpiece from this talented trio
    author: Ross Macdonald

This CD will transport you smack dab into an old hammock, swingin' in the late summer breeze on the banks of the lazy roots blues river. A richly textured blend of blues history, style and musicianship that goes down as easy as a gin fizz or two with your old fishin' buddies. A must have!

  • really hits the spot for that old time blues
    author: RJ Harman

Really hits the spot for that old time blues, Grants harmonica playing is non other than the best....... The deep voice and instrumentation really is out of sight!
