Album Notes

In 2005 John Ralston (recess theory, Legends of Rodeo) is releasing his first two solo records. It all started last summer when, at the insistence of Knoxville producer and friend Michael Seaman, John made the trek north from Florida to record. After a feverish five days he returned home to realize that he had a complete album tracked. "We never intended to make an album. It just happened to turn out that way." Thus, Needle Bed (The Honeycomb & Academic Life Recordings due April 22nd) was born. It eventually found its way into the hands of Jay Bennett, formerly of Wilco. When Jay heard Needle Bed, he immediately invited John up to record at the famed Pieholden Studios in Chicago. In a cold week in November they recorded what will be the second of two releases this year entitled There's always an ambulance around the bend. Both albums are fueled by family death, the feeling of loss, and an enveloping sense of frustration. And while Needle Bed leaves you feeling that it might turn out right, There's always an ambulance... leaves you feeling like maybe you're not so sure.
Tagged to open up for Dashboard Confessional and play the Bamboozle Festival in late April, John will be backed by multi-instrumentalist David Vandervelde, keyboardist Andrew Schaap, bassist Dan Bonebrake (ex-Dashboard Confessional, Seville, Fay Wray, the Enablers), and drummer Jeff Snow (Legends of Rodeo). This lineup will be touring throughout the year, augmented occasionally by Jay Bennett as well as a rotating cast of string players.

absolutely amazing

This CD is by far, one of the best first albums I've ever heard it is so amazing, my favourite songs are probably Gone, Gone, Gone and No One Said It Was Easy, although they are all pretty good. I heard of John Ralston when he opened for Dashboard...and when he sang Gone Gone Gone I was pretty sure that he was a sweet artist! Fav line- wanna touch you, wanna breathe you said f*ck you I don't need you get out- right now..

A Lyrical and Poetic Genious Would Be An Understatement
author: Jay Ryan
A Lyrical and Poetic Genious Would Be An Understatement to describe John Ralston and his new cd Need Bed. A first sampled some of John's work through Chris Carrabba of Dashboard Confessional and found John's work to be very similar. Its obvious that Chris and John both share that masterful vision of lyrical greatness. From "Its Not Your Fault, When We Are Cats, I Believe In Ghosts" to "Gone, Gone Gone", John Ralston masterminds an awesome vision of life and grace. I have not been this excited about a new artist since the days of, ironically enough, early Dashboard Confessional and even earlier days of Further Seems Forever. While, John will probably see limited air play,he will surely be a hit amongst music purists. His music is stunning and inspirational. And most important is his ability for originality and his vision to capture life. Nothing on the America's Top 40 right now can compare to John Ralston's music. A special thanks goes out to CD baby for getting the CD out to me in just 1 business day without having to pay for overnight delivery. That's simply amazing considering I live on the other side of the country.
