Album Notes

Album Notes for: John Roy Zat -- Solo
These songs are pretty much presented as I perform them solo, and all words and music are mine except as noted. Some comments on the songs:

"Headed For The Promised Land" -- After much reading, discussion and pondering, this is what I have been able to figure out about the Big Mystery.

"Irish Waltz" – The true story of how I met the gal I married. The melody is adapted from Turlough O’Carolan’s beautiful tune “Sheebeg Sheemore”. (This is the one song that is not quite “live”. I haven’t figured out how to play the guitar and the fiddle at the same time.)

"Crazy Glue" – There is new love and true love. And there is real love, which you don’t discover until after the first decade or so of being together.

"Broken Hearted Love Songs" -- We all have to face endings. The longer and sweeter the time together, the greater the hurt.

"Little Rabbit" – Loss and acceptance, wrapped up in a happy traditional fiddle tune.

"Trouble Why Do You" – If trouble were money, we’d all be millionaires . . .

"Moths To A Flame" – This is about a high school pal. When I wrote this we had lost touch. Ten years later we reconnected, and he is free.

"Thinking About You" – Ah, new love is such a wonderful thing !!

"Shelter From The Storm" – The world can be too much, and when we are battered by the struggle, our love is shelter from the storm.

"Cry For Me" – When things don’t work out, wouldn’t it be nice to have someone do the crying for you.

"Down In Mexico" – For a change of place and a change of pace, there is nothing like a beach town.

"Long Train Coming" – Do what you have to, do what you love, and don’t do nothing you’re not proud of.

On this project, I relied on and greatly appreciate the skills and talents of: Randy Rood, recording engineer and tool pro at El Cerrito Recording Company; Cynthia Navarro for graphics design; and Maria Kersey and Lynn Landor for photography. Thanks to Joanne Goaux for brainstorming and to Paul Herzof for the loan of his fine family fiddle.

It is 12 tracks of pure joy. The best kind of album is one filled with surprises, like a present under the tree. John Roy Zat has not let us down. It is filled to the brim with songs about love, life and experience. It doesn't stop there, no sir. He used his experience to pull us in further and further. The track list is set up expertly to accomplish ownership of all who hear the album. John's experience and talent shines throughout "John Roy Zat - Solo 2011". The lyrics are stunning, taking us on a journey via his words and music. Each song sounds and reads like a book. I encourage you to listen to the words. You will be amazed, I know I was. John has a gift to be sure. I want to make note of John's work on instrumentation. This is a beautifully produced album, in that John's work comes through loud and clear. His finger picking on guitar is extraordinary. John also plays fiddle, so he is no light weight. This man has honed his craft to a fine edge and it shows in his work. This album showcases John's remarkable talent as a singer as well as a songwriter. His rich vocals bring life to each song. This is one man I would love to see perform live. He hits a heavy punch in a laid back, unassuming way. Absolutely brilliant work. The three tracks I have set aside are: 1 - Trouble Why Do You This track melted me on the spot, I have to say! John Roy Zat makes this track zing baby! His sexy vocal grabs your attention for sure, but oh baby, there is nothing and I do mean nothing like a guitar pickin' man! He has this nailed! It's a great little diddy and with a marvelous groove. 2 - Moths To A Flame I loved this song. John Roy Zat sings this beautifully. The lyrics are exceptional. Anyone with a heartbeat is going to love this and relate to it in their own way. Listen to John Roy work that guitar. Lord! Think I'm in love! 3 - Crazy Glue Now this song is simply brilliant! John Roy Zat sings this with feeling, or is he singing it just to me I wonder? *grins* It will have you singing along and bobbing your head in no time flat. Loved the guitar picking solo in the middle. Marvelous job on production as well. Honorable mention: Little Rabbit What a terrific song! Had me jigging in the studio! Wonderful job on the fiddle! You can tell "John Roy Zat - Solo 2011" is a keeper. An album that lifts your spirit, entertains and leaves you craving more is what we all strive for in this business. John Roy Zat has raised the bar once again. Lyrics, instrumentation, vocals and production are exceptional. Do yourself a favor today, if this is your favorite genre, this is a "must have" for your library. You heard it from me. Damn fine job John Roy Zat! Love it, Love it, Love it.
