John brings an engaging guitar and vocal style to his musical stories and songs. His songs "Legacy Of The Leatherman", "When You Are Older" and "Roaches" are favorites with his New England audiences. His song, "The Crow and The Strawman" was recorded by Cathy Kreger on her 1989 cd release, "Grand Central Waltz", on the Passing Tone Music label. In addition, two of Johns' songs - "Burnin' The Midnight Oil" and "Allyns Apple Farm" have been performed in Great Britain by the band, Aristotle's Lantern. Recently, a song titled, The Maid From Louisville" (co-written with Johns' father, John R. Small) was recorded by the Connecticut based singer, Rusty Chapman.
Johns first CD, titled, "Demo's & Rough Mixes", was released in 2003.
This is a "self-made' CD. Recorded, mixed, designed, printed and duplicated onto recordable CDR discs at Johns' home studio.
Why the title "Demos And Rough Mixes"?
"Well... I had been putting pieces of songs together over a couple of years that I'd hoped would turn into a polished CD. One day I realized that my recorder was destroying my master tapes of songs I'd previously recorded in my studio. Since I wanted to release what I had onto a CD - even if it was from reference tapes that I had salvaged, I thought it would be a good approach to my first CD. It's not an unusual approach for me since I've always found that the "flavor" of any perfect thing is not always as memorable as something with a flaw or two - the character appeal.
Anyway, this CD is a collection of songs I've written over the years that I present to you in its "raw" form.
I hope you enjoy my homemade CD!"

Demos & Rough Mixes

Be prepared to kick off your shoes, settle back and enter a style of quiet intensity. It's not that the melodies are rhythmically slow. It's more that the music has a calming affect that requires one to listen. John has a haunting, thoughtful and soothing voice, even when he's singing about the antics of 'Roaches'.
