notes

John's newest CD, "Traveler," is an amazing blend of his dependably sweet songs and heartfelt stories with a new Celtic twist. John's ancestral visit to Ireland has imbued a lovely greenery into his passionate tales of life and love.

Recorded in Asheville, North Carolina and co-produced by Johnsmith with Chris Rosser, it includes some songs co-written with Tom Kimmel and Pierce Pettis.
-----------

"I want to live my life like I mean it," says singer/songwriter Johnsmith who has distilled his commitment to writing and performing songs that matter...songs that speak to the heart. In these times when so much popular music is a transient experience, John's songs plant their roots deep in the soul. He focuses on the things that make up the big picture for us all - in his words, "family, parents, children, relationships and the spiritual." The sound of his voice is warm and friendly, and his gift for incisive musical storytelling can move listeners to both tears and laughter. Johnsmith was winner of the prestigious Kerrville New Folk Award and a perennial finalist at Telluride's Troubadour competition.
------------

"When I first heard John Smith my attention was captured by his sweet, earthy voice and fine craftsmanship, but what drew me in was his heart. It's clear that he's lived the pain in his songs and that his optimism is hope born of wisdom. That's a rare thing and a gift to all who hear him."
Tom Kimmel
------------

"John Smith's songs always move me. They make me laugh, cry, dance or just sing along. He is one of the most consistent writers of quality songs that I've ever met."
Lydia Hutchinson, The Performing Songwriter
-------------

"I don't know who this Johnsmith guy is. But after his album crossed my desk I feel like I do. His heartfelt, well-written songs casually slipped into my CD player and didn't want to leave...I do know this about Johnsmith...he's a guy who's made a great DIY disc, and whose songs deserve to find a wider audience through (and because of) it."
John Porter, The Performing Songwriter

    author: Myra Hyatt

This was a wonderful CD, my beloved brother had just died after a long illness when I heard the song Part Time Angels on my local public radio station. I had been his caregiver for the last year, and he called me his angel. I cried when I heard it, then went right to a store to find it. Thank you for such a thought provoking and life affirming CD.

  • Love it, love it, love it!!!

This has got to be my favorite CD in my collection. I can listen to it begining to end and thouroughly enjoy each song. My favorite is Rooks in the Castle... This is the perfect CD to listen to for a cozy evening at home in front of the fire. Great job John!!! I can't wait to listen to the rest of your albums!

  • Amazing Talent!
    author: Bruce Lindeman

I "found" John's music when I first heard the cut, "Clear Blue Sky" on the Acousitc channel of Radioio.com -- and was completely blown away. It's difficult to explain unless you simply listen to his music yourself. Start with "Traveler" and work your way through his other three self-produced CD's. Each one is a storybook of poems of hope set to the most perfect acoustic arrengements you can imagine. I think all but his most recent CD, "Kickin' These Stones" he produced by himself. Only on "Kickin" did he employ the genius of Lloyd Maines (father of Natalie, the Dixie Chick). Go to John's web site, www.johnsmithmusic.com. Buy ALL of his CD's, catch him live (I've yet to do so) and savor all he has to offer. Although I wouldn't quantify his music as spiritual, there definitely are undertones of hope, love, and promise in all that he writes about and sings so tenderly. No matter what religious affiliation you claim, these are things each of us strives for in life. John's music is what I would simply call, music for the soul. Check it out -- I don't think you will be dissapointed!

  • He Means It

"I want to live my life like I mean it," Johnsmith's quote is fulfilled as one listens to the music and lyrics so beautifully woven together. Mission accomplished.

I have all of Johns CDs and 'Traveler' is his crowning acheivement. John writes lyrics that really 'get' to you, and his skill as an instrumenatlist and arranger are awe inspiring. I wish I had half his talent.

  • This Is A CD I Would Carry On The Appalachian Trail
author: Jim Kloss (Whole Wheat Radio)

Having thru-hiked the Appalachian Trail in 1991, I was very aware of every ounce carried in my backpack. That meant only 3 of my most cherished CDs could go the full 2,000 miles with me. I wish this CD would have been around then, because I could have reduced my weight by leaving the other 2 CDs behind...

  • A Not so Hidden Jem!
    author: Gary Nims

I came across Johnsmith's song "Part-Time Angels" on an internet radio station, and the same day I bought the CD online. Great lyrics through and through. All I can say is, "Wow!" Thanks, John for sharing your heartmusic.

  • Smooth as silk and easy on the heart and soul.
    author: David Hawthorne, Astroview, Inc.

JohnSmith's music and lyrics are smooth as silk and easy on the heart, and soul. Most CDs lose their charm over time, but not this one. A year later, I am still enjoying it, and it always puts a song in my heart. My best writing is while listening to JohnSmith.

  • Amazing CD - Johnsmith uses Traveler to weave an earthy mystical thread!

After hearing "I Will Fly" on a local folk broadcast, I knew I had to find the artist. What a wonderful song! I enjoyed the whole CD, but have to say "I Will Fly", "Rooks in the Castle" and "Salt in the Sugar" were my favorites. I would recommend to anyone who wants a wonderful, magical, earthy CD!

  • Wonderful Children
    author: Michelle Dalziel

Johnsmith has 11 wonderful children ( songs ) on this CD. Each with their own personality and each touches the heart in some way. It's hard to pick a favorite child off of this disc, and you can't listen to it just once. Try taking it out of your CD player after it's inserted... it's nearly impossible. LOVE IT!

    author: Smokey

Unfortunatey, I missed Johnsmith's set at the Woody Guthrie Festival this summer. Fortunately, they were playing this CD before the Sunday finale at the Crystal Theater. I was not the only one asking, "Who is this?" :-) As soon as I got home from the festival I came to the CDBaby to order it, and it's been in my CD player ever since. You won't be disappointed!
