notes
This record is a fine example of some great contemporary folk music. Its gently beautiful storytelling sung with a smooth and lovely voice. There's good reason that this artist has been performing on the mainstages of folk festivals around the country!
There's a certain simple joy in the songs that comes from the fact that he seems sincerely in love with his craft. He strives to be a poet, a storyteller, an entertaining teacher, and he manages to do it all well.
Co-produced with Lloyd Maines (record producer and father of Dixie Chick Natalie Maines)with contributions from Darrell Scott, John Mock, Tom Kimmel, and many other great players.
"I feel like every time one of Johnsmith's songs gets heard a little healing happens to the world." Buddy Mondlock

Amazing talent….wonderful artist!
author: Jan HammondThe first time I heard John’s music was on an internet folk program. I quickly searched and was thrilled to find his CD's available on CDBaby. I’ve read all of the reviews posted here and I fear that I will be able to say anything that hasn’t already been so eloquently voiced by the likes of another amazing talent, Buddy Mondlock and many others. All I know is that when I put “Kickin’ This Stone” in my work computer CD player, it stayed on constant loop for a very long time. I’ve since told several of my friends about John’s wonderful music. He has touched my soul with his impressive instrumentation, glorious harmonies and incredibly profound and thoughtful lyrics. John is a wonderful artist and the kind of songwriter that so many aspire to become. Be good to yourself and take in all the wonderful gifts John has given.
dancin' in my blood
author: MollyAn incredible performer, person, song-crafter. Check out all of his work- it will make you a better person.
Lives up to a live performance by Johnsmith
author: JanWe have season's tickets to hear singer/songwriters in Johnsmith's genre and very few CD's purchased after the performances have lived up to the live show. Johnsmith's Kickin This Stone is one of the few. It mesmerizes you with the lyrics as well as the music. So many of my CD's I could part with in a heartbeat, but not this one.
I can barely sing along
author: autumnSo many of these songs are so full of emotion and strength, I can't even sing along to all of them because I choke up. I simply adore John's work, and this was no disappointment.
Great cd! John's music is uplifting as is his personality.
author: Clint CollinsA very good cd with a sparse production, allowing the songs to take center stage. The songs are about everyday life and or filled with hope and encouragement. Highly reccomended.
Every song is a 'must listen to' ... this CD is a special gift !
author: Joanne Schlafer - Ft. Collins, COThis CD is clearly Johnsmith's best to-date! His music continues to grow richer with every new CD. Every song on this CD is a 'must listen to' ... a gift for one's heart.
A wonderful Surprise. Rush out to see him Live!
author: Tom PennavariaI took notice to John one night beside a fire with twenty other musicians. Upon hearing his voice, I thought someone had a CD playing. But come to find out it was John singning Kicking that Stone and it sounded great. Many musicians followed him that night, none sounded or played as well as John. I highly recommend his CD's. Also, experinece it live if you can!
wonderful stuff
author: Peter Lainsonover the last few years I have been lucky to get to hang out and play music with Johnsmith. He is a big inspiration. His songs are full of hope and warmth. Probably the most unusual thing about Johnsmith is that he kinda glows...he visibly radiates good vibes.
Johnsmith mirrors our life experience through his own.
author: Patrick NagelJohnsmith mirrors our life experience through his own. The stories on this CD resonate with depth and understanding and connect us with our own stories. Well crafted and superbly recorded, Kickin' This Stone will draw you back over and over, as Johnsmith's storytelling engages you to reflect upon your own ancestry, your own loves, and your own appreciation for what's important in your life today. A truly memorable CD! I'm wearing my copy out!
Long awaited, glad its finally here!
author: DorothyThis CD gets off to a great start with,Kickin' this stone, moves on to Thomas Francis,a tune that I have waited to have on a CD, and then just keeps going with one great tune after another! Beautiful music, very lyrical.
Johnsmith's songs are literate, they shimmer and are beautifully recorded
author: PamI LOVE Kickin' This Stone! Johnsmith has such a unique sound, add in an abundance of wit and insight, and you couldn't ask for a more delightful CD (from the poignant Iris Blue to the mischievous Monkey in Me) - John's smooth voice, and hit-you-in-the-heart lyrics make me an official groupie. John's Friend of the Coyote, a tribute song, *sounds* like a Dave Carter song, with dense intelligent lyrics, a snapping rhythm and no repeating chorus - he even throws in a little *yip* (a la Love, the Magician) toward the end... :-) I highly recommend this CD!!
Fantastic! As always, a wonderful journey. Check out John Smith.
author: RichardA wonderful musical journey. As always, the song writing is first rate and the music is multi-layered.
