notes
The piano in the parlor of her parents' house in coastal Maine was hers as soon as she could reach its keys. On its bench, alongside her church-soprano mother, she learned the magic of harmony. In that same room, her older brothers' records played-Stones, Creedence, Beatles-and in the evenings, her schoolteacher father's collection of Glenn Miller and Sarah Vaughn. It was, Jude Johnstone recalls, "...all the education I thought I'd ever need."
An acclaimed songwriter, Johnstone has an impressive list of artists who have covered her songs: Stevie Nicks (Cry Wolf), Bette Midler(The Girl in Onto You, Trisha Yearwood(The Nightingale, Hearts in Armor), and Johnny Cash (including the title cut of the latter's Grammy-winning album "Unchained", Jennifer Warnes, Bonnie Raitt(Wounded Heart) and Emmylou Harris(Hold On). Her debut CD "Coming of Age" sees contributions by several of these artists, including Yearwood, Warnes, and Raitt, as well as old friends Jackson Browne and "the legendary" Valerie Carter, and the invaluable assistance of Yearwood's producer, Garth Fundis.
CD includes the songs "Wounded Heart," and "The Nightingale," both featured in Lifetime Television's hit series "Army Wives."

First heard the song Wounded Heart on the new tv show Army Wives. Searched the web and found out who sang it. Bought this cd last week. One of the best compilations that I have ever heard. Sorry I had not heard of Jude beforehand.

most excellent cd,really like this music
deep, insightful, inspiring, healing
author: susan laineyBeing a singer/songwriter myself I mostly appreciate the simplicity and soul-bearing of Judes' music. Seems too many writers are avoiding pain & heartache these days. I think peoples hearts need to hear it like like the body needs food, air, and water. Didn't mind the simple collaborations of greats like JB & BR etc....either
from the first song on I was hooked
author: Tom WhiteJust got both Jude Johnstone cds. Seeing that Garth Fundis produced her first cd, told me I would really like Jude. From the first song on I was hooked! This cd remided me of the 60's, when more new & great music was being made. I only wish there was a radio station that could play Jude for all to hear.
This one grows on you

Haunting, majestic piece of Americana/Pop
author: The City Paper-Nashville's Newpaper'Cry Wolf' is a haunting majestic piece of Americana/Pop...'Coming of Age' is soothing and tender...A top flight CD.
Touching, Sincere and Tender
author: The San Diego Union-Tribune...'Unchained' finds Johnstone in near-gospel soulfulness, while the touching reclamation-of-love song, 'The Nightingale' showcases both a vocal sincerity and tenderness.
A Quiet Wonder
author: MoJo MagazineThis CD tugs at heartstrings through songs like the utterly beautiful 'When Someone Speaks Your Name' and 'Wounded Heart'.

Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne, Trisha Yearwood and Jennifer Warnes... No bad gues
author: Pär WinbergBonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne, Trisha Yearwood and Jennifer Warnes... No bad guest-names for an independent released album... I mean, to have one of the just mentioned, as guest vocalist on an album is more than OK, but all four of them. Hallelujah. I must say it right away. Here we have one of the best CD’s I’ve heard in the female singer songwriter – genre for a LONG time. This album is pure heaven if you adore Bonnie’s album from the late 80’s. But it’s unfair to just compare her to Bonnie just like that. There are more influences on here but the cool thing is that she is exactly as good as the influences. Bonnie, Emmylou Harris, Shawn Colvin, Beth Nielsen Chapman are just a few names that I’m more than happy to write Jude Johnstone’s name after. This is pure heaven, and I know it’s big words but I haven’t (or at least VERY seldom) heard an album this beautiful since I heard “Nick Of Time” and “Luck Of The Draw” albums with Bonnie more than a decade ago. Third out “Wounded Heart” is so beautiful and “The Nightingale” is nothing less than a masterpiece. Fantastic tunes! And Bonnie Raitt’s harmonies and slide guitar on “Unchained” is awesome. Well – did you expect Jackson Browne to be bad? Hell no. Listen to his voice in “Let’s Leave It’s Open”. Amazing. And then I haven’t mentioned the Goosebumps-maker number one “The Waters Edge”. And the ending track “When Someone Speaks Your Name” with a piano, cello, acoustic guitar and here naked voice... phew... Marvellous is not enough. Buy it today folks. And she wrote all the material herself. I’m Stunned.

Triumphant
author: Performing Songwriter MagazineComing of Age is a triumphant, emotional effort that melds bluesy, Americana rock with lush, smart production and intense honesty. The songs are delivered in Johnstone's distinct, beautiful voice.
Finely crafted compositions
author: Billboard MagazineSongs rarely sound so potent as when they are delivered by the songwriter who penned them. Jude Johnstone breathes life into her own compositions with her debut disc, Coming of Age. The BoJak Records collection showcases Johnstone's intimate vocal style and finely crafted compositions.
Intimate
author: Music Connection MagazineComing of Age, Jude Johnstone's BoJak Records debut, is a welcome reminder that lyrics and music can still open windows to a songwriter's soul.
Exquisite
author: Bonnie RaittI love Jude's writing and "Wounded Heart" is one of the most exquisite songs I've ever heard."
Truly Emotional
author: Jay Gillespie / Indie-Connections.comComing of Age, is one of the freshest albums of the year. Jude combines beautiful lyrics and voice to create a truly emotional, thoughtful sound...I recommend this CD to anyone who is ready to hear what's been missing in music for a long time, which is true passion and lyrics that mean something.
It's a gem!
author: The Ellsworth American...The songs are simply gorgeous, with music and lyrics fitting together like a hand in a glove...the last song, When Someone Speaks Your Name, should touch the heart of anyone who's ever been in love.
Beautiful and Heartfelt
author: Bruce HartleyComing of Age, rings with a sincerity and honesty that makes the listener wonder if she ever got off the ground at the Portland Maine International Airport...."Wounded Heart" and "The Nightingale" are both beautiful and heartfelt piano ballads that writhe with poignancy and remain gentle....This debut is among the best of the year.
Breathtaking
author: The Global MuseThe music on this album is at times, breathtaking. Jude's songwriting skills are amazing. Not only do the lyrics contain a special substance, but the melodies and the power of the music gives me more than enough reason to praise this artist and this album for days. ... This is just one of those albums that is unforgettable.
pick of the month
author: Independent Songwriter Web-magazineAn emotionally stirring and diverse album with a stellar musical force behind it. Jude has one of the most honest singing voices on the indie scene. It's just real. And what's even more exciting, is how simple the whole record sounds. It's not flooded with a bunch of sounds that clutter the intent. Nope. This little disc has a real basic and earthy quality to it. And with prominent bass player Dave Pomeroy to hold up the rhythm section, you know it's gotta be like tasting a piece of Heaven.
wonderful
author: Music TodayOver the years, we've been quietly following Jude's career as a songwriter through the myriad of "A-List" talent who have recorded her rich lyrics and unique melodies. Finally, one of the most creative songwriters of our day has laid it on the line in her solo debut...Thank goodness. It's sensational!
