"Damn, Joia sure can sing. That's the first thing I think every time I get to see her perform..." ( Acoustic Charlottesville )
Joia, whose "catchy and powerful" songs are "a crossover of the imaginary boundaries between 'folk' and 'pop'," ( Acoustic Charlottesville, ) is no stranger to performing, exposed to an arts-immersed world through a musical family, and dancing both on television and for large live audiences during her childhood in Los Angeles.
Always a singer, Joia began teaching herself guitar at the age of fourteen and composing her own original songs soon after. She now boasts a loyal fan base in her adopted hometown of Charlottesville, Virginia. A Joia Wood concert draws diverse and attentive people, and the effect has been described as "a combination of Jeff Buckley and Ben Harper" ( The Hook )
Her voice will "blow you away" ( Acoustic Charlottesville ) and has provided complimentary dimensions to such musicians as Danny Schmidt, adding her harmonies to several of his albums including his latest, Little Grey Sheep on which "In a moment of pure genius, he and producer, Paul Curreri loose fellow Virginian, Joia Wood for some gut-wrenching and astonishing wailing and moaning which clutches the throat in it's intensity...." ( Frank Gutch, Swampland.com )
Joia, "one of the best female vocalists in the region," ( C-ville Weekly ) is currently recording her first studio album scheduled for release in the Spring of 2009. Her first album, "Live From the Gravity Lounge," ( 2007 ) sold out of it's original limited edition pressing and is available for download.
