Album Notes

Few are the thrills that can compare with the discovery of an artist that only a select few have heard of, who travels beneath the mainstream radar, tugs at your heartstrings and makes you really feel something. Prepare to be thrilled as one such artist is Jolynn Daniel.

Jolynn's musical journey began in Des Moines, Iowa as the child of hippie parents toting an extensive vinyl collection. She picked up a guitar at age 10 and quickly developed a solid affinity for songwriting, absorbing albums from Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Harry Nilsson, Laura Nyro, Karla Bonoff and others.

In the late 80's, Jolynn's mother drove her from Iowa to New York City, dropping her off at Washington Square Park with a suitcase, a guitar and $300.00. That day could have been the start of a brief vacation in the city, but instead it was the first day of many that found Jolynn blossoming as a full fledged singer/songwriter. She became a fixture of what was known then as the "Fast-Folk" scene in Greenwich Village, the vehicle that spawned the likes of Michelle Shocked, Lisa Loeb, Shawn Colvin, Suzanne Vega, Brenda Kahn, et al.

Still in New York City in the early 90's, Jolynn was introduced to guitarist Jansen Press (Mary Karlzen, The Mockers, Surf Piranhas) by drummer Shawn Pelton (Saturday Night Live, Sheryl Crow, Shawn Colvin). The pair headed for Florida in 1994 and began work on Jolynn's debut CD, Suspended (Rebel Sky Music). This collection of quality tracks found a home spinning at over 100 AAA radio stations nationwide, quickly establishing Jolynn as an artist to be reckoned with.

The success of Suspended afforded her the opportunity to open for national touring artists such as Joe Cocker, Widespread Panic, Joan Osborne, among others. Having toured and performed in venues nationwide, Jolynn followed up her debut with the critically acclaimed release Cosmic Daughter (Rebel Sky Music) on which she succeeded in meshing Rock, Pop, Folk, and Country without ever careening too far one way or the other. Critics often recalled the music of Neil Young, Sheryl Crow and The Wallflowers while lavishing praise. Rave reviews from the likes of Album Network, FMQB, MTV Online, Rolling Stone (German Edition, JA!) poured in, as well as a coveted Spotlight Album Review from the industry's leading music publication Billboard Magazine, who singled out Jolynn as an artist to watch.

Word around her new home town of Nashville quickly spread with the release of Cosmic Daughter, solidifying her place within the songwriting community. She was offered multiple live in-concert appearances on the major AAA Nashville FM radio station WRLT's "Nashville Sunday Night" as support for nationally touring artists, as well as appearing on the Nationally syndicated "Western Beat Roots Revival." Additionally, the William Morris Agency invited Jolynn to tour as support for Lost Highway Records recording artist William Topley.

With all that Jolynn has already accomplished, now she advances her artistic vision with the much anticipated follow-up CD aptly titled, Come Closer. Through word of mouth, Jolynn has assembled an eclectic cast of world class musicians that includes Matthew Ryan (Kacey Chambers), Kami Lyle (Ron Sexsmith, Patty Griffin), John Mark Painter (Sixpence None The Richer, Ben Folds), Ken Coomer (ex-Wilco), John Deaderick (Dixie Chicks, Patty Griffin), David Henry (Cowboy Junkies, Josh Rouse) which is a testament to the regard she currently holds in the songwriting capital of the world.

Jolynn Daniel continues to transcend musical backgrounds while redefining American music at a time when the demand for real artistry beckons. It is exactly the kind of honesty and intelligence that Jolynn Daniel exemplifies that's certain to appeal to those ebullient music fans looking for a dynamic new artist to embrace. The music of Jolynn Daniel is compelling and heartfelt, impacting her audiences with songs channeled straight from her soul to yours.

A great follow up to "Cosmic Daughter." A great sing-a-long record!

I've been a fan of Jolynn's music since seeing her perform live in Nashville. I loved her record "Cosmic Daughter" and was thrilled to get my copy of her newest release "Come Closer." The new record shows her growth as a songwriter and performer. Her phrasing is unique. Jolynn is a unique talent and I hate comparing her to other artists... but if you're a fan of singer/songwriters like Shawn Colvin, Kasey Chambers, Lucinda Williams... I think you will really appreciate Jolynn and the group of fine musicians that perform on "Come Closer."

The small but nice Dutch label Lucky Dice Music has struck lucky again when they added Jolynn to their catalogue. Daniel's "Come Closer" is her 3rd cd. What has to be said is that again she hits the bullseye! She is an expert in building bridges between different genres. One moment she grabs you with perfect popsongs like "Everybody Else Does" or "Hold Me Closer" in another moment she serves you gentle folk and country coloured pearls from her pen like "Love in a Bottle", "My Imagination" and "The Girl”. The result is an album that with everytime you listen to it, you will discover new secrets and it keeps on growing! Artists like Sheryl Crow, Shawn Colvin and especially Marti Jones look like appropiate comparisons. Jolynn Daniel is already blessed with an equal amount of talent as the ladies mentioned before. She has also succeeded in getting some well respected collegues to accompany her in the studio. Matthew Ryan for example is there, Kami Lyle (Ron Sexmith, Patti Griffin) also, and the these days very busy Ken Coomer (Wilco) to name a few. Combine such a great cast with the phenomenal writing talent of Daniel and the results are easy to guess. Remarkably catchy songs that will stick like small barbhooks to your eardrums, real earwigs! The big breakthrough, would be real possible with a record like this....

After a five-year recording hiatus, Jolynn Daniel returns to the music scene with Come Closer, an album filled with honest, thoughtful songwriting and catchy, made-for-AAA radio melodies. Recorded at various studios by local notables Joe Pisapia (who also shares production credit), Fleming & John's John Mark Painter and ubiquitous live engineer Frank Sass, among others, the 12-song collection teeters between gritty rock 'n' roll and commercial modern rock, balanced by organic elements of acoustic folk and soul. At the forefront lie Daniel's distinct vocals, which resemble either Sheryl Crow with a head cold or Ronnie Spector with an acoustic guitar depending on the song. The touching acoustic pop tune "Everybody Else Does" candidly expresses a need for love and acceptance, while "Love in a Bottle" gives a fresh perspective on complex relationships. "The Girl I Used to Be" is a bluesy ballad spiced up by John Deaderick's Hammond B3 and local jazz starlet Kami Lyle's muted trumpet. Other standouts include the rockin' "Hold Me Closer", the down 'n' dirty "Tall Tall Hill", and "Never Give In", with "ba-ba" backing vocals presumably inspired by the classic pop of the early 1960s. A fine cast of local luminaries contributed to Daniel's longawaited and well-done third album, including Matthew Ryan, ex-Wilco drummer Ken Coomer, cellist/producer David Henry and many, many other luminaries from the local pop-rock community.

Just wonderful...! A singing and songwriting style which is reminiscent of a young Carole King transplanted into 2003, with strong 70's recollections of Karla Bonoff and Carlene Carter, also with distinct traces of Sheryl Crow, Mary Karlzen, Shawn Colvin and even Susanna Hoffs. I'm obsessed by the sheer quality of this album...! Recommended.
