This is Rhys Jones' third CD on Vigortone and the first with his musical partner and wife, Christina Wheeler. They cover a lot of territory here, songs learned from old hillbilly 78s, timeless fiddle pieces gleaned from from LoC field recordings, songs and tunes learned from friends. All played brilliantly especially those breathtaking fiddle duets.
"Although everything on this disc is beautifully played, the real features here are the 9 twin fiddle duets by Jones & Ms. Wheeler that range from W.E. Claunch’s GRUB SPRINGS to a knockout version of the Cajun HAPPY ONE-STEP that is eerily similar to the classic original by Dennis McGee and Sady Courville. The list of sources for the tunes on this disc reads like a Fiddler’s hall of fame: William Stepp, Hiram Stamper, Marcus Martin, W.E. Claunch, as well as some great bands from the early 1930s: The Grinnell Giggers, Leake County Revelers and the Woodie Brothers. To their credit Wheeler & Jones avoid slavish imitation and play these classic tunes with skill and verve. The combination of great tunes and superb musicianship make this CD just about a “must” for old-time fiddle fans." (County Sales Newsletter)

Terrific CD
author: Fiddler from Pacific Northwest
I bought this to give to a friend but haven't been able to give it away yet. So many wonderful tunes, played so cleanly and honestly and beautifully. The harmonies in the twin fiddle pieces are lovely. There's lots to enjoy and learn here. (PS I first heard it on KBCS -- the DJ played "Jim Shank" and started raving about both the tune and the CD.)
