Album Notes

Jon Hartmann is a veteran L.A. keyboard session player who has worked with The Platters, Ike & Tina Turner, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Bobby Womack, the Staple Singers, Eartha Kitt, Sal Marquez, Morey Amsterdam, J. P. Morgan, the Ink Spots, and many others. He studied composition with Roy Harris at UCLA, and joined the Musician's Union at 18.

His writing reflects a range of influences from Frank Zappa to Igor Stravinsky, with a little Miles and Brubeck thrown in for good measure. Writing, in L.A.'s La Opinion, Ricardo Camarena said that '3 if by air' is "...great Jazz fusion...the pure essence of funk with a latin flavor." Guitarist/composer Steve Khan said Jon "...has always had tremendous compositional gifts, and '3 if by air' gives us all a chance to sample them."

This recording of original material is the blending of orchestral Rock with Jazz fusion. Brandon Fields, sax; Walt Fowler, trumpet & flugelhorn; Ron Hershewe, guitar; Michael Rosen, drums, percussion and chromatic harmonica;
John Pena & Lynn Woolever share the bass chair, and Jon on keyboards. Enjoy.

This is an album that is really easy to listen to without being easy listening. Brandon Fields always transforms the music he is playing and brings a lot of depth to the melodies. This is a very nice contemporary jazz album with cool twists here and there. Definitively worth my money!
