Sallins’ new CD is also a lesson for budding bass players

In local guitar legend Jo Sallins’ latest projects there is a bit of duality.

Sallins will be releasing his newest CD Bass in Ya Face. The CD features new work from the bass guitarist who mixes rock, jazz, and blues themes to from his own distinctive sound, but it also is an instructional disc for bass guitarists.

Sallins has been playing music since he was eight years old and has opened for Koko Taylor, Stanley Clarke, Kool and the Gang, Chaka Khan, besides producing his own CDs and performing with other local artists such as Tony Vacca.

Sallins does a lot of educational work in schools throughout the Northeast, so sharing his music as he does on the new CD is an extension of his teaching. Sheet music is included in the Bass in Ya Face CD package.

Sallins doesn’t want aspiring bass players to simply copy him, though. His message is “find your talent, perfect it, share it.”

Although for many years bass players didn’t get as much of the spotlight as lead guitarists, Sallins said that attitudes are changing. Bass players are expected to play more and provide more than just the foundation for a son, he said.

Today, bass players can be as creative as they want to be.

REVIEWS

Your work is truly phenominal on this record. You are one of the most versitile musicians I know. I like that you can go from soloing your but off to funking it out in a matter of seconds. I appreciate how you are very interactive with the audience and how you sill manage to maintain the musicality of what you are doing. You never cease to amaze me playing piano, bass, drums, percusion, rapping and beatboxing. Dont stop making records because I look forward to what has yet to come.
