Album Notes

In preparation for his visit to Tokyo, Japan as ambassador for Spector Bass Jo Sallins (The Dreamer) has put together a very impressive piece of work entitled "ARTISTIC EXPRESSIONS" cd-dvd. "ARTISTIC EXPRESSIONS" itself is the quintessential culminating work of a man who's been playing professionally since the age of 9. Every musician he's ever dreamed of meeting or playing with, he has done it. Jo Sallins believes in a G.P.A. Goal, Plan and Action. Here's the proof, he learned to play the drums at 9 years old, percussion at 12, bass at 14, piano at 15 and to this day maintains a minimum of 8 hours of study on these instruments, spending the bulk of that time on his newest creation playing the bass and keyboards simultaneously.

Jo put together his first band called "New Star" in the early 80's recalling the very first gig at a Chinese Restaurant, after expenses each bandmember made a grand total of $15.00 a piece. By 1981 "New Star" was without a doubt the hottest top 40 band in the northeast. Opening up for Chaka Khan and traveling to tour in Singapore for a total of 14 weeks. After improving the pay and sustaining 9 years of steady work Jo decided to invest his time in recording origial music. In 1990 he and his good friend and drummer Rick Marshall recorded the Sallins/Marshall Projects “Land of Dreams” 24 recordings later he presents to all that will listen, “ARTISTIC EXPRESSIONS”.

What you are about to hear and see is a demonstration of commitment, passion and sacrafice for one person’s believe in being the best that one can possibly be, not for a second, a minute, an hour, a day, a month, but 38 years. Jo Sallins has a saying, “success is a life long journey of doing your absolute best.” “ARTISITC EXPRESSIONS” delivers just that a journey into the life and mind of a master, PERFORMER, EDUCATOR and MUSICIAN.

What I love about this collection is the opportunity to get to see Jo the educator. His performance is, no doubt, amazing. I've seen him perform and he is just as rockin' on stage as he is on the screen. Seeing a live performance will blow your mind away. The music portion of the collection reminds me of Victor Wooten and Jaco Pastorius. The DVD portion shows performance, but it also shows the educator, Jo Sallins: his great ability to work with kids and adults; people of all ages. He knows how to have a blast, and watching him share that passion with others is just great. Here's to you Jo! :o)

Artistic Expressions is an intense and wonderful showcase of the many sided Jo S
author: Drew Goodwin
Artistic Expressions is so impressive not for its narrowness but for the way in which it shows the different sides of Jo Sallins. As a performer Jo presents not only technical precision but also innovative flair and unique creativity. His sound has the rhythmic intensity of a summer thunder storm and the detached cool of its calm. The truly remarkable aspect of this CD/DVD is the way that Jo dispenses with any perceptions of artistic vanity. His section entitled The Educator presents a slice of what proves to be a unique and powerful facet of Jo's personae. He is amazingly able to work and communicate with youth in a positive and influential way. His communication (even non verbal) bares the marks of someone who is truly gifted for musical education, and he never forgets to include a positive resonant message that not only shocks but opens the eyes of youth to a new vision of what to expect from musicians, adults, other people and most importantly themselves. Showcasing both these components of a complex artistic character is the main achievement apparent in Artistic Expressions.
