My primary aim with “What For” was to capture the conflict that so many of us often feel with loved ones, colleagues, and friends. That feeling is unearned guilt.
Have you ever had a moment in your life when you had felt pride in something you’ve achieved? Have you ever come rushing home from work because you just got a bonus, or wrote a song, or gotten praise, only to have someone you care about dismiss it as insignificant? Have you ever had someone tell you not to be so boastful and egotistical about something you’ve achieved? Have you ever asked yourself whether or not that bitter feeling of guilt was justified?
If you can relate to the above, then think of my song. Think of your accusers, the one’s who deflate you in your moment of elation. Ask yourself whether or not what you love is worth that criticism, and ask yourself….. “What For?”
