Josh Johnston studied Popular Music in the University of Salford, graduating as a pianist, band leader and composer. He is well-known as being a versatile musician throughout the music industry, being the pianist in the band of Birr singer/songwriter Roesy for six years as well as having appeared on stage and record with Kila, Paddy Slattery, Stewart Agnew, SJ McArdle, Noelie McDonnell, Irish tenor Karl Scully and many others. He is also the resident organist at the Unitarian Church in Dublin. He released his first solo CD, Three Friends in 2000 and a duo disc with jazz violinist David MacKenzie, Notes Home earlier this year.
Having been writing songs and instrumentals since 2000, and feeling the intimate feel of the debut CD needed to be broadened on future releases, the time presented itself at the end of 2007 to begin performing this newer material live and recording it for his 2nd solo album. Meeting the rest of the Asylum Harbour band exclusively through other bands he had played with, he hand-picked the musicians he knew could present the diverse music to a wider audience with maximum conviction and impact. Josh and the band recorded a CD, Asylum Harbour (released 29th October 2008) which takes the excitement and drama of the music and places it in a recorded context, superbly produced and engineered by Josh and Eoin O’Brien.
