notes

Josh Williamson Band "JWB"

What hits you first when you hear the Josh Williamson Band performing live is the tremendous amount of music coming from only three people. What hits you next is just how good that music is.

You look for the guitars. You swear there are two, but you only see one. And the singer and the guitar player are the same guy, and you get dizzy as you watch him articulate the lyrics while simultaneously his hands play a line that other guitar players couldn't get through while even just breathing. Head down as he rips open a lead, black eyes glaring through black hair, then back to microphone he growls the chorus.

Also known as "JWB" - the Josh Williamson Band is a rock power-trio with a huge sound and a reputation for great live performances. Rooted in the blues but with funk and hard rock flavorings, JWB delivers its riff-laced rock set with the hard precision of an orchestra, the explosive energy of a punk rock band, and the deeper soul of a delta bluesman. With a nod to the past, theirs is a sound that propels forward, with a feeling everyone understands but have never heard expressed this way.

Ever since Josh Williamson sneaked into a blues jam to play guitar at age 15 (and was kicked out after two songs for being obviously too young) people have been shaking heads and dropping jaws at his smooth, attacking style. At the age of 16, he won a nation-wide contest sponsored by Fender Guitars, and performed with Kenny Wayne Shepherd live at the House of Blues in Los Angeles. At the age of 17, with his first band - the Josh Williamson Blues Band - he opened for Joe Louis Walker in front of 5,000 people in San Jose, California.

But Josh Williamson is more than a guitar, and the Josh Williamson Band is more than a guitar player. Since coming to Seattle in 2001 at 18, Josh has worked hard to find his music and his band, and in the Pacific Northwest has found both.

The newest member of the Josh Williamson Band, Matt Bos, is the perfect complement to the chemistry between Josh and Patrick. Having played drums since he was seven, Matt grew up associated with the music business, and had the opportunities to jam with the likes of Dick Dale in his own living room. Like Josh and Patrick, he has lived all over the United States, and brings a diverse taste in music that works well to round out the JWB sound.

Influenced by the greats and inspired by the classics, the JWB sound stands strong and unique on its 2002 debut CD, "A Working Man's Breakfast", which showcases the band's versatility and artistry with eleven rock originals garnering brisk sales, local radio play, and a wellspring word-of-mouth following.

With the recent release of "No Shelter" the Josh Williamson Band continues in the power-trio rock tradition of "A Working Man's Breakfast," but takes it to many new and exciting places. The album begins right away with adrenaline pumping on the intro to the title track, "No Shelter." From there, the energy continues into one of the most sonically interesting songs of the album. With its time changes, key changes, distorted bass solo, backwards guitar solo, and many vocal layers, "Shallow Shores" is a song that you will find new things in every time you listen to it. The energy comes through in this album. From the uptempo "Reverie" solo, to the thoughtful slower moments in "Half Empty", to the acoustic lullaby, "P.A." which closes the album, every songs provides it's own feeling to be emersed in. With this album, a new era of the "JWB" begins.

"Definitely one of the up and coming rock bands... a full-fledged rock and roller."
- HotBands.com

"Reminiscent of Stevie Ray Vaughan, Hendrix, or Robin Trower... a rock-blues powerhouse with scorching guitar work."
- IndieShout.com

"Josh Williamson...one of the nations best new guitarists."
- San Jose Mercury News

The Josh Williamson Band - if this is the first time you have heard of them, it won't be the last.

I just stumbled upon this cd, and I must say, it was a great find!! The production, musicianship and attention to detail is far better from what I've come to expect with other independent releases. The music is similar in style to Hendrix and Trower, but with more emphasis on quality songs, not just guitar playing. (The tight vocal harmonies are sweet too.) If you're into good rock and roll music, get this cd.

  • You'll find yourself playing it over and over!

Track 1 is great, 2,3 and 4 really heat things up...very rockin', professional, interesting lyrics, tight band. Amazing guitarist, drums and bass are hot too...some sweet vocals and harmonizing. The lyrics and choruses will stick with you.

  • Wow.

This is a great CD. Really good production, and performance. A lot like Jimi H, but with a little Credance, and Allmans. Mostly a classic album rock feel. Pretty broad, but not too broad.

This is a great CD. You will hear this on the radio, and teenagers who listen to it now will listen to it in their 40's. The music and lyrics flow with a story, and the themes are heartfelt. I really can't say enough, it's my favorite CD.

  • You will hear more from this band...

Every once in a while, a band comes along that makes you wonder why you haven't heard of them before. The "JWB" is one of those bands. Straight out of Seattle, these boys can rock and DO on their latest release, "No Shelter." This is a collection of tight grooves, lush vocal harmonies and hot leads. The band gels well together and it seems like they have fun playing the songs. On some tracks (Half Empty, P.A.), you feel like you're in the room with them...

  • Compelling first exposure to this talented artist!

    author: Jeff Benson

This cd captures your attention from the first note and keeps you sonically entertained until the last chord lingers away. This a GREAT guitar album, but it is also a great SONG album, BASS album and DRUMS album. The musicians and arrangements are top notch and the quality production reminds you of how an album is supposed to sound. Get this cd now!

  • This CD rocks...
    author: Ron Sparks

A well-produced, listen-to-it-straight-through-the-first-time blues/rock CD. The arrangements are sophisticated (check out the final instrumental track), and the musicians top-notch! Top to bottom, a great effort...

  • Absolutely a great new CD!
    author: Mike Grady

40 years of playing and listening to rock n roll and R&B...and JWB has produced a good new work. The riffs are unique and yet not overwhelming. Crossovers are first class. should be a up and comer now
