If Paul Simon and Sting were to write some Blue Grassy songs, an Eastern European style Polka, render a Chagall painting, include some New Orleans Blues and Soul, it might sound something like this cd with its compelling lyrics and gorgeous harmonies.

Jan (pronounced yahn) Peters has been playing music and singing songs for about 20 years. Based in Davis, CA, for thirteen years or so, there he was a full time musician and vocalist. He also played in several other groups and solo with other groups and people such as JOE CRAVEN, ROB ICKES, CLAN DYKEN, (clandyken.com, and is featured on their 'REVIVE THE BEAUTY WAY' CD), , BILL SCHOLER AND HIS BLUES BAND, LINDA BOOK AND THE DOG EARED PAGES,THE SLAVES OF RHYTHM, and DI PATTERSON (featured on 'DI PATTERSON SEXTET LIVE AT THE PALMS').

Now in Bellingham, WA for the last twelve years, 'THESE WATERS', by JAN PETERS AND THE MONDAY NIGHT PROJECT is a culmination of all these years and influences. Songs of love and life, this is an uplifting and sweet listen. Jan's other current project, THE NAKED HEARTS, of Bellingham, will be recording soon. See janpetersmusic.org ~

A fine self produced recording debut

"These Waters" comes across with an upbeat, appealing vibe. Though eclectic, the variety of styles employed also have a project cohesiveness at the same time. Jan Peters has assembled a crackerjack band for his recording. The strong rhythm section - the drummer, bassist, guitarist - all put in fine efforts. Sister Maggie registers a very impressive job on backup vocals; nice to hear her solo as well. Some notables from the disc: “Behind This Train” is well arranged, played, sung well and relaxed. The song writing has some nice hooks, too. “Drumming In The Night” has a jazzy/pop vibe which a guy like me enjoys. Jan plays some nice clean, simple and sexy mandolin lines. “Primera Visita” is wonderfully unexpected in the mix and a nice showcase for Jan's harmonica chops. “These Waters” has some really nice moments in its drama….and it’s space. Another nice showcase of soulful harp playing by Jan. Conceptually, “Market Girl” has this charming Peggy Seeger meets the Grateful Dead salute to old folk ideas in the modern day mix of things. All in all, a fine self produced recording debut for Jan's writing, arranging, instrumental work and his inimitable wonderful, unmistakable voice that I've known for over 20 years." - Joe Craven “Behind This Train” is well arranged, played, sung well and relaxed. I just can't stop listening to this CD. Everything about it is awesome - the melodies, the messages, the instrumentals, the rhythms, the voices, the lyrics, the styles. I gave away four more of the Cd's as gifts, and my buddies are raving about it too!

Hints of the Past

Hints of Paul Simon's early and late years in songs like "Cold Seattle Morning" and "I and the Village.” "Behind This Train" and "Drumming in the Night:" songwriting reminiscent of Jan's earlier days in Davis, California, back at the “Delta.” The sound of Jefferson Airplane in "Market Girl." And echoes of John Mayer and Hendrix in Jan's electric guitar playing in "These Waters."
