Album Notes

Recently voted "Best Latin Jazz Trumpet Player of 2009" (Latin Jazz Corner), young lion Jonathan Powell can not so easily be defined. Sharing the stage and recording studio with such world renown musicians and artists like JT Taylor (Kool & the Gang), La Excelencia, Sam Rivers, The Pedro Giraudo Jazz Orchestra, Q-Tip, Andy Milne, Gary Thomas, Lenny White, Reggie Workman, MK Groove Orchestra, Just Blaze, CL Smooth, Slick Rick and Snoop Dogg, his attention to detail has earned him respect in diverse musical communities. Jazz guru Nat Hentoff first wrote of Jonathan's playing "Powell's crackling range and the electricity of his imagination reminded me of the first time I heard Lee Morgan and Clifford Brown. His voice is his own..." -JazzTimes (April 2003). Through such contrasting musical collaborations, Jonathan's original music was born of diverging influences... his group nu Sangha was born.

Nu Sangha is made up of some of the best up-and-coming musicians in NYC. Individually they have played with Paquito D'Rivera, Lonnie Plaxico, Antonio Hart, Michael Phillip Mossman, Andy Milne and Dapp Theory, Benny Reid, Ze Luis, Larry Corryell, Reggie Workman, Resolution 15 and DBR.

Jonathan Powell and nu Sangha are exited to release their debut album "Transcend" May 14th at the Blue Note.
