Blues Revue (USA) has described the sound of Jean Paul Rena & Terrawheel as ‘Roadhouse Blues’. During live shows the band shows its true quality, that roadhouse-BBQ smoky character. When listening to the album just close your eyes and you can imagine sitting in a Mississippi juke joint or a true Chicago blues venue, hollering from an Alabama porch or hanging in a gung-ho New York City mobster lounge. No pussyfooting; the gaps between the songs are not long enough for you to recover. The tight-knit hard ballin' sound is held together by groovin' drums and bass, allowing JP to overlay a dark howlin' voice and a distinctly wailing ‘ crash and burn’ guitar. Punctuated and supported by familiar echoes of a venom-minal ‘Mississippi saxophone’ in the tradition of Marion "Little Walter" Jacobs, the best harmonica player who ever set foot on this planet.
Ask Jean Paul Rena where the future of his band lies and he’ll tell you: “It’s out there!” Out there where Rock and Soul meet the Blues, where Led Zeppelin meets John Lee Hooker, where the nail hits the wood.
A deadly combination of dedication, heart, skill and quality. Blending originals with a dash of Albert King and Muddy Waters. Honest traditional raw roots-rock, drawing heavily on Chicago and Mississippi-delta influences as well as inspiration from Texas axe-men.
Jean Paul hails from a little old Dutch seaport, of which the name has proven to be a tongue-breaker to many, a foreigner. Story has it that JP used to call in the fishermen's ships when heavy weather was imminent and so became a blues-shouter. Ascertaining his raw and powerful ‘dark-brown’ voice this could well be the true reason how the head-honcho blues-scatter acquired that necessary ingredient to Terrawheel’s gritty blues-rock blend.
