J.R. Clark, a protege of Blues great Lil' Ed Williams of "Lil Ed' and the Blues Imperials" shows his versatility on this c.d. Not only has he mastered the slide guitar but is also a double threat on standard guitar, burning up the frets on the title cut.

The JR Clark Band has just recently released it's second self-produced CD titled "I Shoulda Listened To My Conscience". J.R Clark penned all thirteen cuts and the CD is getting rave reviews. On a few tracks you can hear the influence that Lil' Ed of "Lil' Ed and the Blues Imperials" has had on J.R. He and Ed have become close friends over the years and Ed has become a mentor for J.R. He even calls J.R. "his son". J.R. is continuing a style of slide playing that Lil' Ed, Ed's uncle J.B. Hutto, Hound Dog Taylor and Elmore James have all mastered. Learning to play all types of chords in the "open D" tuning, he can do a whole nights show playing slide just as Lil' Ed does. Not only can J.R. lay down some greasy, gutbucket, house rocking, boogie slide guitar; he is also a double threat on standard guitar. Another blues legend that has had quite an influence on J.R. is Luther Allison, which is quite evident when you hear him cover Luther's "Cherry Red Wine" or "What's Goin On". J.R. has even been known to reel in some of the "not so blues purists" with uncanny renditions of cuts from George Thorogood and the Destroyers. His ability to pull songs out of nowhere, from old blues standards to house rockin' blues and even a little soul, has earned J.R. the nickname of "Human Juke Joint". " I feed off the audience. Once I get a vibe of where they want to go, that's where I take it. I want everybody to have a party".

Best indie purchase ever.

Lil' Ed Williams is one of my favorite blues artists. When I read that Lil' Ed and the Blues Imperials were involved in this CD, I gave it a try. This amazing CD has some truly outstanding cuts. Even more remarkable is the consistency of really good music on almost all cuts. Very unusual in today's music. On a few cuts (.g. Goin' to Chicago, Shouldda Listened to My Conscience", the guitar work and arrangements might easily be confused for Lil' ED's (formerly) unique work, but many cuts feature Clark's own style. Actually, I should say styles, since this CD features features great variety. The unusually mature guitar work is sometimes stinging, sometimes subtle, and never intrusive. The surprise here is the quality and originality of the material. The singing is also very nice. This is a gem.
