------------------------
Here's a breakdown of each song from the mind of Jon Robert Quinn.
THE LAST CRIES - I'll start off by saying this was an awesome show. This venue has since gone out of business. I will miss performing there. Those were the best of times. This song is from the 2004 release of One Long Road. About half way through the song, you will hear some slide guitar. I was actually using a chair. I had gone out into the audience and used the metal off the side of a chair to get the slide guitar sounds. Great times.
SHADES OF SUMMER - Another song from One Long Road. People everywhere I have played just love this song. When I wrote this song, I really had no direction as to where I wanted to take this song. I just wanted to write a pretty song and I am really happy with how this turned out.
DIMENSION - Another great song from One Long Road. When I originally wrote this song, I didn't like how the recording turned out. So, I went to my buddy who had a little home studio setup. I wanted a different take on the song. In order to get the guitar to sound the way I wanted it to, we had to put the mic the amp in a hall closet. The dry sound of the closet, got the sound that we wanted. When performing live for this CD, obviously no closets were present, but the guitar still sounds great. I love this song and people have stopped me mid show just to request this song.
CONFUSED - In March 2004, I release Solo-Fisticated. Confused was the second single from that CD. This song always comes out way better live than it does on the CD. The dynamics in the song come out more. When writing this song, I was having trouble looking for the right notes in bridge. I was reading an article of Guitar World Magazine and it talked about some Yngwie Malmsteen licks. I looked up the sheet music and found exactly what I was looking for.
CLOUDS IN THE SKY - Have you ever looked up just to look at the clouds in the sky? If not, you should. Just watching the clouds, clears your mind to think about other things. A sense of relaxation. When I wrote song, I wanted it to be as soft as clouds in the sky. The recording from 2004 on One Long Road is just that. This live version, is soft but not as soft. About half way through you will hear some misplaced notes. I was using a beer bottle as a slide from the audience, but its not as easy as you think. Its still a very pretty song and the audience enjoyed it.
JAZZIER SIDE - This was my first official Jazz tune. From the 2004 release of One Long Road, it was originally called Jazzier Side of Things, but when released, we ditched the "of Things". I love the groove in this song.
SMOOTH - Smooth has a nice little story to it. When I wrote it in 2004 for the One Long Road CD, I thought it was so smooth, it flowed. I thought Smooth would be a great name for this song. I guess it kinda stuck. Like Dimension, it was written in my friend's home studio, so like that song, the mic and amp were in the hall closet. Also, when recording this song, we took so many takes. We kepts adding more and more guitars to the mix. Usually when I record a song, Its 1, maybe 2 takes. If I cannot play the song all the way through without takes when recording, I keep trying until I have it down. Ninety percent of all of my records are recorded live in the studio with 2 or less takes.
SPEED FREAK - This is a song that has been with me for a long long time. Originally written in 1997, about a year after picked up the guitar for the first time, I called it Speed Freak, because at the time, it was the hardest song for me to play. I thought it was soooo fast and complex. Now, its just a fun song to play. It was finally released in March 2004 on the Solo-Fisticated CD.
NIGHT RUNNER - One day I walked into a Circuit City store and picked up a beat making software package. I went home and wrote a song. The hard part about writing this song was, this software was not intended for my style of music, so the only way to make it flow was to have a double-delay on the guitar. The guitar may sound like a lot of work, but its very little picking. The delay is doing all the work... SHHHH. Its sounds cool.
Thanks for reading and enjoy the CD.
