Album Notes

John Sawyer has appeared as a recording artist, actor, dancer, on Broadway, television, and on concert stages world wide. John's new solo album The Real Me features cover songs from the 60's through today with John's unique interpretation of them. John's style has been described as lush pop with a soaring vocal range and orchestral rock elements. A highlight on this cd is John's duet with Grammy Award winning recording artist Debby Boone on the song Always On Your Side.

John originated the role of Nathaniel Taylor in the Tony Award nominated Broadway production of The Civil War written by Frank Wildhorn and directed by Jerry Zaks. He performed the role of Amos in the World Premiere Company of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Whistle down the Wind directed by Harold Prince, and performed the title role in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. John starred opposite Tony Award Winner and Emmy Award nominee Kristin Chenoweth in Promises, Promises, and appeared in Anyone Who Had a Heart, a musical of Burt Bacharach’s music at the Roundabout Theatre Company in New York City, directed and choreographed by Gillian Lynne (CATS). Television credits include As The World Turns, The 1999 Tony Awards, and The Rosie O’Donnell Show. Additionally, John has worked with such performers as Liza Minelli, Burt Bacharach, Rosie O’Donnell, Linda Eder, and Carol Lawrence.

Tulsa audiences might remember John in Theatre Arts Productions of The King and I with Grammy Award Winner Debby Boone, and as Lancelot opposite Charles Shaughnessy (TV’s The Nanny) in Camelot. At the Tulsa Performing Arts Center, John starred with legendary composer David Friedman in Listen to My Heart. John is an active member of the Tulsa community and lends his time and talents annually for the DIVAS fundraiser for H.O.P.E. Testing Clinic. John is also proud to support Resonance, The American Cancer Society, and The Breast Cancer Network of Strength. In 2006 and 2007, John teamed up with Tulsa favorite Rebecca Ungerman to produce two critically acclaimed, sold out concerts at the Tulsa Performing Arts Center. Their cd Rebecca Ungerman and John Sawyer was nominated for a 2007 SPOT Award for best Jazz CD.

John recently starred with Kristin Chenoweth, Kelli O’Hara, Lara Teeter, and Barbara DeMaio Caprilli in STARRY NIGHT: A Tribute To Florence Birdwell with the Oklahoma City Philharmonic in a tribute to their voice teacher and mentor Florence Birdwell.
