Their fourth release sees New Orleans' Johnny sketch and his crew a little older and a little wiser… but that ain’t stopping them from laying down some deadly funk. Their trademark pyrotechnics are front and center on “The Big Awesome,” while two more years spent touring the nation’s back roads – and an unusual recording studio in the woods – have imparted a flavor that’s slightly smoky and hints of the old country.
They bridge tradition and ultra-modern swamp funk with tunes like “New Dixieland,” a horn-heavy second-line extraordinaire, and the driving sea chantey “Cora Lee”. The Dirty Notes are known for their dirty rock, and so shall you recognize them; “I Just Lied” is greasier than Southern-fried chicken. “Kaiser”, with its gritty grooves and distorted horns, is hard rock from a funkier dimension. Afro-beat and R&B merit the same attention to storytelling and songwriting, and time after time the Dirty Notes demonstrate their uncanny ability for not saying too much.
“Glory of God,” a poignant and powerful ode to one of nature’s strangest mysteries, closes out this sweat-drenched album. By that point, your speakers may have become a smoldering ruin, but you’ll be asking for seconds.
