Judie (Lawler) Cochill is a "musician's singer" who spent her early dues-paying years on the West Coast singing club dates, TV and Radio back-up, voice-overs, and commercials (and to quote her mother, "Supermarket openings"). She toured the Playboy circuit opening for featured comedians and singing with many of today's jazz greats before settling in the Detroit area where she has built a loyal and enthusiastic following and reputation as a true musical craftsman. The discipline of singing in church and Temple choirs has enabled her to develop and enhance her distinctive, intuitive singing style.
A chance meeting with the remarkable Gene Bertoncini and an off hand remark about wanting to record with guitar accompaniment has resulted in this fine, intimate realization of a "girl singer's" dream. Enjoy!

Creamy caramel vocals with an edge (or several edges) of hot pepper. Superb production--precise without sacrificing warmth. Outstanding, sensual balance between the performers. Every heart and every set of ears deserve Judie!

Up close and personal

Judie Cochill has the ability to draw you into the song and let's you experience both the music and the lyrics to its' fullest. I have enjoyed hearing Judie perform live over the past few years and was very excited to see this CD released.
Her song selection is something I would have assembled myself with the exception of those songs that I haven't heard. How I missed these jewels over the years is a mystery since they are wonderful pieces. In particular, "I Wish I'd Met You" is an incredible song and her treatment of it is exquisite. The words dig deep into my soul and magically transports the listener to the most intinate and romantic time of their own life.
The very intimate feel of this recording is perfect to showcase Judie's talents. I felt so many times that I was in a small private venue with her and the others musicians playing just to a small attentive group. Gene Bertoncini is a perfect pairing with Judie. His soft and passionate accompaniment playing on the guitar compliments Judie's vocals and his solos are 'right there!' He plays it in the manner that I personally like to hear it played. Michael Moore on bass plays a wonderful supportive role whether in the ballads or in the straight ahead tunes where his walking lines are clean and in the pocket. I was pleasantly pleased to hear him utilize the bow on more than one song and add so much to the songs.
As mentioned before the songlist is wonderful. If I had to pick a favorite cut it would be, "You Must Believe In Spring", a long time Michel Legrand composition favorite that I was first introduced to from his "Live At Jimmy's"
recording featuring Phil Woods. It's a beautiful, passionate and haunting song that will move and touch you.
The recording is excellent. One of the nicest engineered projects I have heard in a while. It is a fresh sound, a very live and spontaneous feel which jazz should always be. There is no over processed or over produced sound here. I can testify that Judie's voice is every bit as warm and alive in person as is captured here. I can only encourage you to get this recording and to be on the look out for Judie singing somewhere around the Detroit area. You will not be disappointed!
