Album Notes

SONGS I WROTE OR WISH I DID (JSL Records) was recorded in 1999, with the great Victor Lewis on drums, the swinging Larry Goldings on organ, the colorist Vic Juris on guitar, the anchoring Essiet Okun Essiet on bass, and Special Guest Joe Lovano playing tenor sax on two tunes.

Silvano presents the wonderful songs of Bob Dorough, Billy Strayhorn, Thad Jones/Abbey Lincoln, Myrow & Delange and Jane Hall among others alongside her own original songs and lyrics to critical acclaim for the great ensemble playing.

Silvano was voted in the Top Ten Vocalists of Down Beat's Readers Poll in 2000 & again 2001 when she released this disc and she continues her search for fresh material, as evidenced by her later albums (Riding A Zephyr, Let Yourself Go, Women's Work & Cleome). She was voted Top Ten several more times with Best CD awards in subsequent years.

Judi Silvano has recorded as Side person on Joe Lovano's Grammy Nominated Blue Note CD's: UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE, RUSH HOUR with Gunther Schuller, and CELEBRATING SINATRA with Manny Albam's arrangements. In addition she can be heard on pianist/composer Kenny Werner's PAINTINGS (Pioneer-Japan release) and his upcoming release of a new composition "No Beginnings, No Endings" for Wind Orchestra featuring Werner, Silvano & Joe Lovano, due out in 2010, plus on the Capstone Records "Contemporary Composers" Release of Lori Dobbins' composition Sketches For Silvano written especially for her and scored for Voice, Vibes and Percussion.

Since this release in 2000, Silvano met composer & pianist Mal Waldron, and recorded "Riding a Zephyr" with many of his songs for the esteemed Soul Note Record Lable of Italian fame. Some new Silvano lyrics made their debut for the date. Two Silvano originals capture the empathetic relationship between the then-75 year old Waldron and the 30-something Silvano, in an open improvisational setting.

In 2004, Silvano's first release of all- Standards "Let Yourself Go" came out on Zoho Music, with her mother's favorite songs from the '30's and 40's, with Ingrid Jensen, Rufus Reid and Dick Oatts with little big-band arrangements by Michael Abene. This CD won Top 10 honors on several year-end lists.

Silvano released "CLEOME: Live Takes" an album of mostly her originals (plus a Sun Ra tune and a Japanese folk song) in 2008 featuring her working band: George Garzone (clarinet & sop & tenor sax), Michael Formanek, bass (& John Lindberg, bass on 2 tracks) and Gerry Hemingway (drums & percussion) which shows the amazing and often telepathic improvisational interplay among these four musicians. Using simple melodic forms, they create an amazing array of colors and moods!

Ms. Silvano teaches Voice Lessons & Workshops in Vocal Improvisation called “Freeing the Voice” and Master Classes in Song Interpretation & Performance Skills around the world and in New York City plus offering Educational Workshops in Music & Dance for all ages.

REVIEWS

Jazz lovers will be CAUGHT UP in this...

Around September, 2004, I reviewed the first Silvano CD we had heard... made some commentary about not hearing a lot of "originals". Judi promptly sent a package with several of her CD's, all featuring original tracks. This one is the last of the stack, & fully half of the 12 cuts were penned by Ms. Silvano. Those who have read this 'zine for some years now know that I believe originals usually carry more "weight", in the sense that the performer usually will belt it out more when they wrote the tune... you know, th' energies are easier to "project"! That certainly holds true on this one... jazz lovers th' world over will be (like totally, man) caught UP in Judi's crystal-clear delivery & exuberance. I was strongly impressed on my first listen to Judi's "brand" of jazz, & she comes across with even more uniqueness on "Songs I Wrote". Her scat style (once again) on track 7, "Listen To This", just blew me away.. & when you put Larry Goldings' on organ, Essiet Essiet's bass, Vic Juris' H-O-T guitar & Victor Lewis' drums behind it, you wind up with what this is - my FAVORITE TRACK on the album; cut 9, "Hey Boy", is another romper, too! If you're looking for "the same old jazz" - go elsewhere... but if you want tunes & energies that will stick in your mind for years & years - GET THIS album. It gets our MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED rating!
