notes
In Numbers 15:38, the Children of Israel are instructed to makes fringes in the borders of their garments as a reminder of the Laws of the Torah. Symbolic blue threads in prayer shawls remind modern Jews of the presence of God.
The rich, evocative soprano of Vancouver born Judith Levy (nee Chertkow) reflects the depth and breadth of the music she has performed over her career. Operatically trained in Canada and England, Judith infuses cantorial music with the performance quality of classical Art Songs. With a Sephardic mother and Ashkenazi father, Judith grew up steeped in both Mediterranean and Eastern European Jewish culture and music as well as orthodox religious training.
Threads of Blue is a recording of eighteen songs that weave together aspects of Jewish religion, languages, culture and traditions, touching milestones in the Jewish religious calendar and life cycle; Sabbath and High Holidays; love, marriage, birth, death; folk, liturgical and art songs in the hybrid Jewish tongues of Yiddish and Ladino as well as traditional Hebrew.

Awesome voice and songs
author: Yirma CookWith such a beautiful voice, I would like to hear more songs in Ladino. I really enjoy listening to this CD
This CD is definitely worth it!
author: AllegraI could not believe just how spiritual the music on the CD came accross. It really packs an emotional and sonic whollop. The mix of operatic sound with the traditionality of the music is a terrific counterbalance. I say, $15 well spent!
a must for every Jewish home and the CD libraries of all music connoisseurs
author: Karen KelmThreads of Blue is a wonderful compilation of Jewish music, covering many milestone celebrations that are enhanced with music. The simple accompaniment leaves space for Judith Levy’s glorious soprano to fill the listener’s ears with a deeply moving interpretation of each song. It is easy to hear the joyous praise expressed in Shalom Rav, regardless of whether or not the listener understands Hebrew. Similarly, Hashkevenu, sung a capella on this recording, conveys the unmistakable sound of a worshipper asking God for protection and guidance. The depth of emotion in the delivery of each song’s meaning is matched by the breadth of the subject matter in the playlist; from Ani Mamin (the confirmation of faith sung by Jews marching towards their deaths in concentration camps) to Tumbalalaika (a happy song about married life) Judith Levy sings poignantly about life’s important moments, large and small. This collection is a must for every Jewish home, and the CD library of all connoisseurs of fine classical singing.
