ABOUT SELF TO SOUL #1: 'LIVING PHILOSOPHY'

How does spirituality affect psychology? Can spiritual beliefs or practice change the way we feel? Episode #1 of the “Self to Soul” series begins with Dr. Judy Marshall explaining how her years of professional experience as a psychologist - along with her own spiritual awakening - have led to the conviction that spirituality can lead to immense personal transformation and emotional healing.

The dynamic of change is “living” philosophy.” This is presented as a process of transformative spiritual commitment that is ongoing throughout life. First, the person accepts the truth of universal core beliefs that have been present in some form in all religions throughout the world and recorded time. Like a spiritual DNA, these core principles are underlying, but manifest differently from person to person, religion to religion, and culture to culture. They basically establish: (1) a belief in God or a greater spiritual unity, (2) the idea that we are spiritual beings within physical bodies, and (3) the importance of charity and compassion to others.

It is pointed out that “living” philosophy goes beyond belief. Once the core principles are accepted as true, the individual attempts to “live” these beliefs by translating them into behavior in everyday life. Such commitment typically has such positive effects that it reinforces the core beliefs in an ever-increasing feedback loop of belief, behavior, and personal experience. Over time, spiritually committed people have the sense of opening a door to
a new reality - or accessing a higher “spiritual” dimension within. It is the personal spiritual experience that fosters psychological change.

The episode ends with an exploration of what we mean by “spiritual” experience. Traditionally associated with mysticism, “spiritual” experience is described as different from more usual psychological feelings and perceptions. Specific characteristics of “spiritual” experience are presented, such as the awareness of a real transpersonal connection, paradox, and a sense of wholeness, harmony, and integration. “Spiritual” experience is always below the surface of the physical world.

ABOUT THE SELF TO SOUL SERIES

Psychmaster's SELF TO SOUL -- A Vision of Psychology and Spirituality, is a series of stand-alone episodes that combine inspirational lectures with a tapestry of sight and sound to produce a multi-dimensional, meditative, and thought-provoking experience. Photographed and edited in a cinematic style, with original musical scores, the episodes interweave actual lectures by Judy Marshall, Ph.D., psychologist (in a fantasy lifeguard tower “office”) with exterior footage and surreal images to create a haunting, emotionally-compelling panorama. Appearing also as the caped archetypal “dream guide,” Judy leads the viewer on a journey of imagination from “self” to “soul.” As the episodes progress (and move more towards “soul”), they become increasingly complex, multi-layered, and kaleidoscopic.

Written and narrated by Judy Marshall, Ph.D., a clinical psychologist with many years experience, SELF TO SOUL presents a God-centered, non-denominational theory of personal psychology based on core universal spiritual principles. This is based on the premise that spirituality is primarily experiential and can lead to immense personal transformation -- as it has for people of varied faiths throughout the world and recorded time. In other words, when we begin to live as a “soul,” we have the opportunity to re-define personal identity, heal old emotional wounds, find new avenues of meaning and connecting with others, and significantly enhance our day-to-day lives.
