Album Notes

Listen to this CD of the Jugendmusikkorps Bad Kissingen (the Youth Band of Bad Kissingen, Germany) and you’ll find it hard to believe that mere children – between the ages of eight and 18 – could be such accomplished musicians.

The lovely spa town of Bad Kissingen in the Bavarian region of Lower Franconia is a world famous health resort, where visitors can relax in an oasis of gardens and fountains, and visit the elegant casino and shops and cafes. Bad Kissingen also boasts a wide array of cultural offerings, from theater to festivals to concerts.

One of the most delightful is the Jugendmusikkorps Bad Kissingen, the Youth Band of Bad Kissingen, a group of young musicians which has won friends and fans from over the world. Established some 40 years ago, the band’s extensive repertoire ranges from traditional folk songs and marches to waltzes and popular tunes. Costumed in their distinctive, traditional military-style uniforms, these young musicians are utterly beguiling performers and ambassadors for their city.

This recording presents the young musicians in 1980, under the leadership of then-Director Hans Wollgast. The performance captured on this CD certainly turns on its head that tired old adage about the proper place for children: The young musicians of the Jugendmusikkorps Bad Kissingen should be seen and heard.
