JUNE 2007:
Peaceful Night
By Julia Cunningham

Sparkling Musical Delight
Some fear the night. Some embrace it. The melodious music of Los Angeles harpist Julia (Julia Cunningham) reaches out in the night like an anxious lover ready for the satisfaction of an evening of quiet (but not solitude) that turns into excitement and passion. In addition, there is comfort, kindness and enchantment. Along with several talented musicians, Julia plays her harp on tunes that cross over from contemporary to ambient to World genres.

Julia gives us the tune Heaven. It is like walking amidst a land of rainbow crystals with the sun shining through every prism. There is a colorful interplay of light and shadow. There some dreamy synthesizer beds on this one that add lightness to the tune.

Celebration is the New Age equivalent of a block party. The background holds a happy crowd effect as the guitar, marimba, and harp twirl about in elation. It is the energetic sound of people having fun just because.

The title song Peaceful Nights has a jazzy tempo and a carefree style. Whispered words in the tune offer an allusion of the passion that roams the night. Night sounds remind of the peace that is to be had during the shadowy hours between twilight and dawn.

My favorite track is called Reflections. It contemplative and dreamy. It a seat beside a quiet stream of water that mesmerizes your spirit. The flute is a welcome witness as you watch the dragonflies dart about, hear the reeds rustle in the wind and the feel your heartbeat that is louder than the sound of the universe.

Night Market on the Adriatic (Bonus Track) once again brings about Julia's party theme, this time with Old World European flavor. A warm, moonlit night in the island of Korèula perhaps, with the heady aroma coming from the vineyards on one side and the sea on the other. Performers line the streets as the smells of cooking cheese, chicken and veal waft through the evening and maybe a bite of gibanica for desert. Nevertheless, it is the people that make the up the stars in this evening sky. Smiles and warmth are the order of the night.

Julia has multiple degrees in music including a Masters from Yale. She has performed worldwide in jazz and blues festivals, and appeared with numerous symphony orchestras from Vancouver to Moscow. Julia's music is light. It floats into your senses and lets you travel along while it explores the night and all it has to offer from a positive journey.

A soulfully elegant recording by a stunningly beautiful and talented harpist.
It is difficult to put into words the profound peaceful experiences I have had absorbing Julia’s awesome music over the last couple of weeks ~ but with mere words I will do my best to honor this amazing recording, “Peaceful Night”, by an equally amazing musician, in the fashion that it deserves. I will begin by saying that the opening title is appropriate in its namesake: “Heaven”. For, truly, Heaven is where one feels like they are from the very first note of this entire 11 track sonic soundscape. In this first piece, after a beautiful intro featuring smooth synth textures aptly supporting Julia’s rich and beautiful harp tone, one cannot help but be hypnotically drawn in by the subsequent peaceful, yet infectious, ambient groove that ensues ~ a subtle synth drum pattern is accompanied by pulsating sleigh bells and framed by breathtaking bar chimes at just the right moments. As the piece develops, we are further treated to another percussive layer featuring some wonderful hand drumming ~ and all of this is tastefully brought together with 3/2 Son Clave throughout. At the forefront, of course, is Julia’s magnificently lovely harp playing. When I listened I could tell that Julia has truly mastered her instrument as every note is played with gentle authority ~ and yet she does this piece (as she does all of the ensuing pieces) the justice it deserves by not overplaying. . .thus effectively illustrating the intended musical message of peace. I could continue in this fashion with each of the 11 tracks on this recording and, in doing so, effectively write a short novel about this elegant and sublime offering by Julia. Though the entire CD is a highlight in and of itself, other special moments for me as a listener include: “Limecello & Mimosas at Villa Tie Mi” – in the free-flowing, rubato intro to this lovely composition we are definitively introduced to Julia’s virtuosity on her chosen instrument ~ every note in perfect place ~ followed by a hooky melody supported by wonderful string pads and another contagious electronica groove; “Journey’s End” – this lovely tone poem features a wonderfully poignant string arrangement as the consummate frame for Julia’s meditative melody on the harp which is doubled at the outset by the flute ~ the flute is even a featured melodic instrument in the bridge section while Julia soulfully supports with lush arpeggios. . .the arranging in particular on this piece really spoke to me, as did the vibe; “Reflections” – speaking of “vibes”, this piece, to me, seemed to resonate in “flagship” fashion the message of peace and tranquility that abounds throughout this awesome collection of musical portraits. . .once again, Julia flawlessly illustrates her virtuosity on the harp with heavenly divine arpeggiations ~ and I love the fact that Julia selflessly feels she does not have to be front and center melodically as the flute beautifully carries the main melodic motifs on this one; “Candlelight, Wine & Tiramisu” – perhaps of the “smooth jazz” ilk more so than any other piece on this recording with its more complex harmonic implications ~ yet another tastefully composed and performed percussion arrangement/groove as well as another hooky melody skillfully and, yes. . .smoothly played; “Peaceful Night” – simply one of my favorite melodies (among all of the great ones on here), this piece also hypnotically features the power of spoken word by Julia intermingled throughout ~ also, harmonically this piece resonated so much with me. . .I felt a cascade of positive energy and light and continue to feel this each and every time I listen; “Love Palace” – another favorite of mine with its trance-like vibe and yet another melody that just stays with you. I could continue on with myriad specifics, however in general terms I would also add that this recording is incredibly well produced with a copious amount of “ear candy”: Not only is it what I like to call a “headphone” album from a technical standpoint with its interesting panning and effects, but it also features wonderful sounds of everyday life ~ children, people, etc. ~ interspersed in the background.. .very artistically and, again, tastefully presented. In closing, I must say that I am absolutely impressed on many levels. I do not know Julia personally, but this offering of hers has left me with the strong feeling that she is as lovely and beautiful a person inside (as she is on the outside, of course) as her music is itself ~ in other words, I sense that as a person Julia embodies the passion, class, elegance, natural grace, and soulful qualities that are evident in every note that she plays here. . .and I suspect that to be the case with her every performance as well ~ indeed, I sincerely hope that one day I will have the good fortune of experiencing a live performance of hers. In the meantime, I highly recommend this recording and would encourage that everyone have this CD in their collection ~ not just because I know in my heart of hearts that it will speak to you with such unparalleled depth as it did to me, but simply because I firmly believe that of everyone’s support Julia is both deserving and deserved. . .

My Nightly Relaxation & Rejuvenation!
Ever since Julia's CD arrived, it's been my nightly companion.

It came into my life at a time when sleep had evaded me for weeks due to work stress. I began listening to it in the portable CD player beside my bed and sleep returned that night as soon as I finished listening to the final track. Now I listen to it every night and it never fails to have the same result.

Every track has a distinct character, yet all are soothing, relaxing, and take me to a place beyond my worries, stresses, and cares of the work day—and yet, I listen to it even on the weekend. I cannot imagine ending a day without the gentle, musical meditation of Julia's music now.

Two tracks in particular seem to stand out for me—Journey's End and Night Market on the Adriatic. I cannot explain why, but if I begin to drift into slumber at all, Journey's End wakens me for the remaining tracks. The Middle Eastern flavour of Night Market on the Adriatic reminds me of my former involvement in Middle Eastern Dance and brings to mind memories of dancing in my costumes with my veils and zills (finger cymbals)—they're fond recollections.

I contacted Julia online after this CD arrived to tell her how much I loved it and how I could hardly wait for future recordings. She responded saying that she is working on her second—I await its release eagerly, though Peaceful Night will remain a well-played friend!
