"Looking for my place in this world", is not only a lyric from "Save Yourself" by Julian Coryell, it's his mission.
Since childhood, Julian has been playing music, be it bass or guitar with his legendary father jazz guitar pioneer Larry Coryell, touring on a variety of instruments with everyone from Carole King to Aimee Mann, producing and orchestrating tracks for other up and coming artists like the critically acclaimed Webb Brothers, or writing, producing and playing his own music.
No longer confined by the rules and regulations of a major record label,
Julian and co-producer/engineer Joe Zook (who has worked with everyone from the Counting Crows to Tricky) have spent the last year working on songs that make up his latest cd, "Rock Star".
Featuring Julian on Virtually every instrument and recorded completely in his home studio, this latest body of work showcases his extraordinary talent and something that has been missing from music at large - depth of content surrounded by irresistible sounds.
"Rock Star" proudly wears it's eclectic influences on it's ambitious sleeves.
From the title track (which whimsically evokes the spirit of early Queen) to "You are not Glass" (which sounds not unlike something Simon and Garfunkel might have written if they were Gen Xers) to the Brian Wilson/Ram era Paul McCartney inspired "Day Off" , it's clear that "Rock Star" is equally grounded in the past, present, and future of original music.
Julian continues to broaden his horizons by not only creating new material for himself but by co-writing and producing for others as well as joining various artists on the road.
"I love working with other artists almost as much as doing my own thing".
"It allows me to express a completely different side of myself and come back to my own music with a fresh point of view".
Julian's music may invoke your past like a photograph, it might make you long for something you didn't know you wanted, it may even move you like a roller coaster ride, but at the very least it will captivate you with it's wit, wisdom and creativity.

No major label deserves your money as much as this single record does.

Even aside from the undeniable talent, the *quality* of this record is second to none. As I said, NO major label deserves your money as much as this single record does. And live, Julian is better yet. His previous record, "Bitter to sweet" was amazing as well. To boot, he is a genuinely nice fellow to speak with. That should be reason enough.

An undeniable talent
author: Brian Donner
Rock Star is such a strong album. The diversity from song to song gives you even more respect for this amazing musical talent--not to mention he plays practically every instrument. It is obvious that he took tremendous musical influence from the bass player in his earlier group Coryell.
