Album Notes

Oh I just don't know where to begin...So I guess I'll start somewhere in the middle.

A couple of years ago I had released my last CD, Rockstar. As I traveled across the country promoting it, I started throwing in a few covers here and there to keep things interesting night after night. Occasionally people would ask me about certain cover songs. Had I ever recorded them? And so on.

In between tours I kicked around the idea of documenting said songs for posterity. But how? The traditional route of finding a record company to subsidize the project didn't feel right. Too many committees, too many expectations. Yet all the money I was making on the road went back into more touring. How would this lark get off the ground?

As luck would have it, fate intervened. I got a call to play on a record for a friend. The day of the session, the gods of technology conspired against him.
Every time we tried to record his music, the studio computer crashed. After several attempts he finally threw his hands in the air and decided to call it
quits. He walked out of the building, taking the other musicians with him.
So there I was, all alone in a big beautiful recording studio with a whole day in front of me. As I sat in the lounge watching T.V, Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" came on. I thought about my cover of "Lithium". I said to myself, if the next video that comes on is "Lithium" (and I can get the studio computer to work), I'll take that as a sign to record my covers CD right here, right now.

I guess nothing happens by accident. Lithium came on, the computer cooperated and here for your listening pleasure is Undercovers, a collection of other artist's amazing songs that I've enjoyed playing over the years.

While my primary intention is to share my original music with you, surely nothing bad can come from a little cover party along the way. It's truly been my pleasure to record these songs. Every one of them has special meaning to me. In fact, it was quite hard to narrow it down to just eleven, (but if it's good
enough for Nigel, it's good enough for me). Let it be known I could've easily doubled that number. Maybe Undercovers volume two will rear it's happy
little head some day.

So, until my next album of original material materializes, please enjoy this little musical pit stop (as have I) along the way!

My favorite is probably “Visions” by Stevie Wonder. It is just so beautiful.

I am dying to hear new original music from Julian, but it looks like that is going to have to wait a little longer. Meanwhile, anyone who has seen him perform knows that he loves to play covers. I was told by a friend of his that he knows every rock and roll song ever written. I believe it. He is a great guitar player, arranger, singer and overall nice guy (based on one fascinating meeting we had outside the Hotel Café one night). And so it is a natural for him to do a covers CD. This is a very simple production with Julian on keyboards, guitar and drum machine and a couple of bass players thrown in. What really stands out are his selections. It is surprisingly very 70’s with covers of Led Zep, ELO, Stevie Wonder, Nick Drake, Elvis Costello and Emmit Rhodes. But not necessarily the songs you’d think. Right now, my favorite is probably “Visions” by Stevie Wonder. It is just so beautiful. But listen for yourself.
