Album Notes

‘I don’t know why I love you (like I do)’ is the new single by North London artist Julian Shome and the first from his third album, ‘Its midnight somewhere in the world’, which is due for release in February 2010.

With his first two albums, Julian made a name as an eclectic artist who could successfully nestle a 2 minute pop song next to a 7 minute cinematic instrumental, jumping around the genres but still bringing his own distinctive sound to the whole.

With the evocatively entitled, ‘It’s midnight somewhere in the world’, Julian Shome brings us an exciting collection of 10 tracks, invoking echoes of past and present. The insistently joyful first single, ‘I don’t know why I love you (like I do)’ sets the tone with a clever interplay of vocals singing ‘in the round’ over a catchy bass and keyboard riff, pushed along by an infectious 1970s casio drum machine beat.

With this, his third installment, Julian Shome is the exception to the ‘difficult third album’ rule and has proved once again his knack at creating sublime melodies.

‘I don’t know why I love you (like I do)’ is already receiving airplay on the BBC Asian Network and BBC Introducing shows. In a live session for Angel & North online magazine with BBC 6 Music’s Chris Hawkins earlier this year, Julian spoke of his life as an independent artist and of his unique family history, his mother being the first baby girl to be born in the infamous Changi Prison in Singapore during WWII.

Julian’s first two albums, ‘Glimpses’ (2006) and ‘Black Light’ (2007) were recorded on his travels up and down the West Coast of USA and Canada after he left London to seek new horizons and work with new musicians. With those two albums doing well in North America, Europe and Asia, Julian’s music received airplay across North America and in the UK, with live sessions on BBC Essex and BBC Suffolk and both records played on the BBC Asian Network.
