Album Notes

This album and a CD of a live concert that Julian played in 1975 is available on ConBrioRecordings.com.

Julian White was born in Chicago and began piano studies at the age of five with Sadie Glass. He gave his first recital at the age of six and began composing at eight years. He continued his musical studies with Emmanuel Bey, Leonard Stein, Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Peter Mennin, Robert Starer, Sergius Kagen, and Egon Petri. In 1958, he graduated from Juilliard School of Music.
Mr. White has enjoyed a full career as a pianist, composer, and teacher. He has performed in the major cities of the United States as a soloist with orchestras and recitalist, as well as appearing on radio and television on numerous occasions. As a resident of the San Francisco Bay Area, for the past 45 years, he has received wide recognition from his community as an expert musician.
This is the first recording of his, devoted to the works of Brahms, chosen because of the close affinity that Mr. White feels with the style and dimension of Brahmsian interpretation.
First released on cassette in 1987, this CD was recorded on the vintage Sony F-1 Digital Processor and remastered from the original audio tapes. The full essence of Mr. White's performance is captured here free of edits and electronic processing.
-Edward Hollcraft
Piano Works Op. 116 (1892), and Op. 118 (1893) were composed during the last five years of Brahms' life. These thirteen works represent the quintessential Brahms, both in the perfection of form and in the clarity of idea. We have the widest range of expressed feelings - resignation to passionate yearning, whimsey to the mystery of the profoundly tragic - and always for the mature Brahms - the tribute to the art that conceals art.
