Julia Barry is a song-writer and performer whose live sets have been described as "mesmerizing" and "provocative." You can catch her live on the East Coast, especially in New York City at places like the Bitter End, Pianos, Crash Mansion, and Rockwood Music Hall. (Visit http://www.JuliaBarry.com for more gig dates, information, and photos/videos.)
Julia studied and wrote music for piano and voice from a very young age. Entering as a teen into an era overflowing with female confessional pop music, Julia's songs distinguished themselves with inventive melodies, substantive lyrics, and powerhouse piano-playing. Her agile, intimate vocals are simultaneously melancholy and sweet, a fusion of gritty (think Tori Amos), wistful (Beth Gibbons of Portishead), sultry (Diana Krall), and luminous (Joni Mitchell).
Julia's debut album, Arrivals (copyright "Julia Rose"), was released independently in June 2002; a second album is forthcoming.

I've never listened to a disc and said "wow!" after every song before - until this one. Julia plays amazing piano here and her voice just soars. Her full, but understated arrangements and intense lyrics make this CD a must-have. I can't wait for her new one!

Breathtaking.

The album is simply stunning; nothing about it seems to fail. Her voice is enchanting and her piano playing is masterful. On top of that, the lyrics are incredible. I always judge lyrics as best if they can be taken out of the song and read on their own and still retain their integrity. All her lyrics stand up to this; so pretty. Highlights are, I think, Black Swan, I Am, Petunia, and Song for Us Trying, though every song is incredible.
This is a CD that I want to buy hundreds of copies of and give one to everyone who means something to me (if only I had the money for it ...).
