Album Notes

Following the success of her debut recording Mornings Like These (2002), Kerr has released Deeper Still and fans will not be disappointed. In Kerr’s signature style, Deeper Still weds clear and beautiful melodies with intuitively poetic lyrics to create tunes that open your heart and get your toes tapping.

With a refreshing lack of pretense and a keen eye for the beauty in the ordinary, Kerr’s songs celebrate a tender and compassionate observation of daily life and establish her as a songwriter of startling depth and lucidity.

Kerr blends powerful visual images with evocative melodies to create a multi-sensory musical bouquet, a reflection of her degree in fine arts and her talents as painter and photographer. She writes about the intimacies of her own life, penning lyrics about family, friendships and the commonplace, and always finding the larger human story as it is played out in the personal and the day-to-day. Kerr’s songs are deeply rooted in both the natural and the human landscape and draw their inspiration from summers at the cottage her great-grandparents built, as well as the seasons she spent planting trees in northern Ontario and cooking in a bush camp in the high Arctic. Affectionate without being saccharine, the vividness and simplicity of Kerr’s music rewards listeners with a timeless emotional honesty that feels like coming home.

Julie was also able to record with the legendary Tim O'Brien on one track, Old Friend.

With influences ranging from Nanci Griffith to James Keelaghan, Kerr honors traditional bluegrass, country and folk music melding them in a style unique to her. Kerr collaborates with husband Craig Korth (Jerusalem Ridge) who brings his expertise with banjo, guitar, dobro and mandolin to her inspired lyrics — and the tunes they generate together run the spectrum of sweet, soulful, spirited and spicy. Kerr and Korth are also members of Widowmaker, where their musical alchemy shows its killer bluegrass side.
