notes

"Julien Kasper is a superb guitarist ... a dynamic and fluent player with a rich mind full of musical ideas. This is a terrific musician who should not be missed." Alan Chase, The Portsmouth Herald

"Kasper displays... righteous control, dead-on phrasing, progressive composition, and savvy ears... This guy is really, really good..." Guitar Player.

"Kasper seemlessly flips from one genre to another..."Blues For Charles" is the kind of heartbreaking ballad suffused in the delicate nuance of a master like Jeff Beck, but "Bigger than You" is the kind of roadhouse stomp that Kasper excelled in with blues-rock outfits...The album is full of suprises like that: shifting styles delivered with Kasper's gorgeous tone and vibrant imagination...proof that he's got the touch and the sense of melody, along with the power and energy of his role models." Jay Miller, The Patriot Ledger on "Flipping Time"

(Flipping Time) was recorded live in the studio on 24-track
analog tape . . . what the band played is what you get. And what you get is burning rockers ("Ten Years Late"), slow blues ("Blues for Charles"), Crescent City grooves ("Flipping Time"), a lightly swinging shuffle ("Foot Clappin'"), and more, songs that tie together to form a unique and highly creative instrumental project. Kasper's influences are no secret: Hendrix (witness the heavy groove of "Talkin' About What"), Eric Johnson, Jeff Beck, and - although he may not be a direct influence - Jimmy Herring comes to mind here and there. But Kasper is undeniably his own player, his guitar voice most distinguishable when he leaps off the ledge of predictability on frantic tunes like "Jackalope," a song he contributed to a Bruce Katz Band album he played on a few years earlier. His forward-thinking arrangements and courageous solos have left more than a few guitar players wondering, "How'd he do that?" What's more, Kasper enlisted a number of New England's top-shelf musicians for this release, leaving no chance that there would be any weak spots in his first shot out of the barrel as a solo artist. - Ann Wickstrom, Allmusic.com.

"Julien's playing resonates with pure expression - there's nothing stock or cliched or flashy. That's not only confidence that's art." Auditions on Call.

***
Julien Kasper is a unique, soulful guitarist who tempers his fiery blues/rock virtuosity with an unerring sense of melody and composition. He combines rock, blues, and jazz with groove and flow that blends styles naturally. This is raw and emotional roots music that draws the listener in as much for the sake of the music itself as the high level of musicianship.
Julien also has recorded with the Bruce Katz Band, Mighty Sam McClain and Pat Ramsey, and has toured with Rounder recording artist Michelle Willson.

Julien Kasper's much anticipated debut CD "Flipping Time" encompasses his dynamic range as a guitarist and composer. Explosive psychedelia, grooving shuffles, straight-up rock and roll, and intimate ballads all coexist to take the listener on a compelling musical journey.

Julien's band is composed of some of New England's finest musicians:
Ed Spargo -Bass
Zac Casher - Drums
Matt Jenson - Hammond B3 organ and piano
"Flipping Time" also features special guests:
Marty Ballou - Bass
Marty Richards - Drums
Bruce Katz - Hammond B3 organ
