In 1997, Just Desserts released their second full-length album "Give Up The Ghost", which played on college and alternative radio, while the newly re-formed four-piece made the rounds again throughout New York City during the late nineties. Co-produced by Wharton Tiers (Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr.)this collection featured two songs from Fessenden's critically acclaimed film, "Habit", ("Save You From Yourself" and "Mystery") and received various accolades for its vitriolic spirit and fusion of the acoustic folk element and a garage band sensibility.
David Avery of CMJ wrote "Backed by an understated and cleverly arranged ensemble, singer-songwriter/guitarist Tom Laverack offers lyrical gems about everything from alcoholism ("Alcohol") to homogenized rock radio ("Last Rock and Roll Band"). For fans of Mark Eitzel, Bruce Springsteen, Replacements."
Mathew Lawton of the Album Network wrote "Just Desserts is a truly fulfilling band. Give Up the Ghost will keep ya coming back for more."
FMQB wrote "The ecclectic folk-rock group Just Desserts' new album Give Up The Ghost (Earhorn Disks), is full of songs that express real emotions, both the good and the bad. The simplicity of the music is what makes it so enjoyable. No pretentious elitism or "artiste" airs, this band is down home and in your backyard. Check out: "Last Rock n' Roll band," "Maybe I'm the One," "Save You from Yourself," "Beautiful Life," "Alcohol," "Road to Ruin," and "Mystery." "
In the last several years, Fessenden has continued to make great films, including "Wendigo" in 2000. Laverack's songwriting was again featured in the film with the song "Hold Out" which is available on the CD "Gift Horse" (available here on CD Baby).
Three songs from Laverack's soon to be released CD Cave Drawings are used in the upcoming film The Last Winter, also written and directed by Fessenden and produced by Jeffrey Levy-Hinte (Thirteen, Laurel Canyon) due to be released in September 2007. The track “Running Out of Road” was written for the film and is featured during the ending credits.
Laverack is slated to release his fifth album "Cave Drawings" in September 2007 on Sojourn Records. Laverack, along with producer/drummer Mark Ambrosino, are founding partners of the independent label, Sojourn Records - an innovative label highlighting the importance of partnering with artists, leveraging technology, and assisting great artists to connect with great audiences.
