Album Notes

Wandering English troubadour and multi-instrumentalist Justin Grounds has had a restless 2 years of touring and writing and now offers his long-awaited new record Francesco, released on his own label Exploding Tree Records. Written and recorded on his epic journey through Europe, America, Canada and Australia, Francesco explores a deeper journey with themes of lostness and belonging, distance and time. With a guitar, some recording equipment, a camera and some notebooks, Grounds’ set off from England with no agenda but to try to live the songs and let them guide his path, time and again finding himself drawn to the marginal areas of society; drug addicts, the homeless, the mentally ill, places which reveal the hidden treasures in the everyday mess of life. The final song on this eclectic record, recorded in front of two microphones in a dark Canadian studio at midnight, seems to sum up all that has come before it; “Time…it brings jewels and it brings pain/And sometimes they’re the same.”

With a degree in electro-acoustic composition and life spent immersed in music, poetry and painting, Grounds’ voice and heritage spans the spectrum, from Beethoven to Buckley, and with his cast of collected musical friends; adding the sounds of french horn, accordion, ‘cello, double bass, percussion, guitars from Hawaiian band The Girlas, and the other-worldly vocals of Canadian singer Karly Warkentin, this is a haunting and exquisite record that seems to hark back to the poetic voice of an earlier age.

I mate Justing Grounds on sept.2005 in Melbourne. My old friend and drummer Marcus Flack introduce to me with Justin Grounds. We have visited together in central Melbourne station and ate together. We were staying together for a few days and Justin was always talking about music and playing guitar. I didn`t know that he was working for this album at that time. Andway fantastic! `all the best Justin` A well wisher n friend, Gopal Sangroula. Tokyo Japan.

Thank you to my son Ashley who introduced me to this beautifully crafted piece of music. Seems that Justin Grounds is a visiting teacher at his school here in Melbourne. Thanks to Justin and all the fine musicians who contributed to it - I'm absolutely knocked out by it. Its my album of the year. Some tracks stir such emotions, give me goosebumps, bring tears to my eyes (I'm listening to Francesco Part 2 as i write this). Brilliant.

A rare, hidden gem...

Every now and then, when the mainstream demands your attention because of either talent, timing or marketing flair, a low-profile artist can slip through the net. Hello Justin Grounds, of Warrandyte. Two years ago, Grounds, a vagabond of sorts, began his journey when he “stuffed a few clothes, notebooks, a guitar and some paintbrushes in a bag” and left England. Well now he’s arrived at a magical, musical place. Francesco is a gentle charmer, which channels Jeff Buckley at times in some well-crafted songs and sweet melodies. The album is bookended with the outstanding acoustic opener, Cathedral Bells and the closer, Broken Open. In between is the haunting moodiness of The Painter, the yearning ache of Autumn Song and a mid-tempo change of pace with the Fishing Song. Guest vocalist Karly Warkentin is a dream on Summer Jacket.
