In the Velvet Underground’s singles bar Tom Waits is drinking hard with Nick Drake, cold beer with whisky chasers. Just the Dust are on the juke box.
Based on the long standing musical partnership of Pete Cooke and Pete Kenny they hail from the twisted woods, eternal Sundays and abandoned quarries of the heartland.
The songs on their latest CD “rattle of stones” are filled with dark disquiet; serene melodies with implacable lyrics sung in a deep soulful voice. Sometimes it’s discordant acoustic rock, sometimes haunted 4am blues, at others bright unplugged pop.
There is a slashing, mordant sense of humour, glimpses of transcendent beauty and a sense of perilous fragility.
Reviewers on GarageBand.com have said:
“starts out like Magical Mystery Tour Beatles - meets - Bone Machine era Tom Waits…and it continues to evolve and blossom...like music from a demonic carnival.”
“Beautifully composed and sincere…the vocals are amazing.”
“Great vocal presence. Some fine piano playing going on….short and sweet, and very well arranged.”
“Impossible to dislike...wonderful voice too - effortlessly soulful and natural.”
“These organ or harmonium notes could almost be car horn blasts off in the distance as the song opens. This male vocal is so beautiful - reminds me of Antony and the Johnsons with that amazing deep internal vibrato.”

Fascinating and rewarding music by excellent band
author: Ant
This is a surprising and fascinating album from a bunch of talented and original musos who clearly know what they are doing but are equally not afraid to take their time to produce something that is worth putting onto plastic... What's more it bears repeated listening, with nuances of lyrics and music seaping out all over the place. Hard to categorise although you can have fun spotting the influences, and all the better for that - try this if you are bored with genre music and want to stimulate your musical tastebuds...

this is rewarding stuff that enriches with repeated listening.

Just the Dust take you on a journey; down the road, along the river, by train ,away from the heartland. The past, like Robert Johnson's hell hound, is never far behind. Waits,Cave and Drake are fellow travellers but these songs stake out their own territory and there is much to delight and inspire here. Play it Right, this is rewarding stuff that enriches with repeated listening.

Strong Songs To Rattle Your Heart
author: Christo
Songs with heart, songs with feeling. Up close and personal. Perspectives of life - you'll recognise things from your own for sure. The icing on the cake and adding to the vibe is the unusual instrumentation and wonderful arrangements, plus Pete Kenny's soulful voice which really communicates the powerful emotions in these songs.
Rattle of Stones engages you right away with the opener "Road" - a tough road it is - "the road away from you" - but a stirring one. Then comes a well observed fun jazz tinged track Parents ("they were right"). A favourite of mine is the anthem "River" which grows and grows. In an age where disposable formula albums are churned out by the score, why not treat youself to this unique album by this truly creative band.
