REVIEWS

An innovative, Intelligent and cogent fusion of Hip Hop and Jam.
author: KidCyrene
Musicianship is excellent, though it should be said that their studio album (Kudra) is a little more intricate and tight. Never-the-less, this is a very good live album from the boys in San Diego and it proves that they can do more than produce quality music in the studio. Musically, their groove reminds me of everything I like about Jam bands without the self-agrandizing solos and ever-wandering orchestrations. Lyrically, this is some of the best hip-hop available. Alfred Howard, though still a bit un-refined, is a world class poet and lyricist. His lines are crisp, intelligent, political and moving. His delivery is unique in that he eschews many of the populist trends in rap music in favor of an approach that is more 1920's Harlem Renaissance and 1950's beat poecy than it is 2K bling. I applaud the fusion that these men are trying to accomplish and if you are not wholly satisfied by the cookie cutter hip hop that is saturating our radio waves, you will too. It should be said that the sound engineer made some errors in recording this live album and as a result you may end up turning your volume knob up and down throughout. Annoying, but it doesn't interfere with the musical enjoyment.
