Sitar Shofar Chillout? Yiddish R&B? Jewish Flamenco Dub House? Electronic Bossa-Niggun? What was the recipe for these musical anomalies: It was a passion for Chassidut which temporarily drew Rabbi Shalom Pasternak away from his musical path of Jazz piano. Five years of the esoteric discipline later, Shaloms musical fire found a new, sacred form: Niggunim. Composed by holy Tzaddikim (righteous men), these melodies have the power to bring the light of the infinite directly into our hearts. The task of giving arcane melodies a fresh flavor seems daunting, but in Tzfat, the mystical city of Kabbalah, things have a way of revealing themselves. Enter Daniel Fries whose thirst for new musical direction led him through projects of diverse styles including Flamenco, Jazz, Funk, Indian, Afgan, Arabic, Persian, and African, and performances in America, Europe, India and China. His recent stint in Italy produced collaborations with the Italian dance label Motivo, and several co-authored songs with the Italian pop artist Laura including the hits Radio Star and Irraggiungible, which she sings at San Remo this year. From ethnic to pop to dance Daniel was ready to take on a project which would combine all his experience and talent, and he found himself in the vortex of Tzfat, surrounded by musicians, at the house of a rabbi bent on bringing Moshiach through music.

love this music
the combination of ancient Jewish tradition with the funkiest of sounds and the power of extraordinary musicianship, just sweeps me away.
R. Pasternaks writing and arranging is something the music world has been waiting for. If ever there was true Music of the Soul, this is it.

Music from another world!
author: Aaron Shaffier
From the very beginning, Ancient of Days transports you to another world. You are well aware that you are experiencing music that comes from a deep sense of humbleness. It is both refreshing and uplifting.

My faith in the power of music is restored...

"Ancient of Days" is a reminder that music, when done well, can have the power to evoke emotion and stir up inspiration -- even when it's pop-based and even when I can't necessarily understand all the words! Some of the songs on this record, such as "Open Your Eyes" and "Movements" have utter disregard for the modern sensibility of short song-length, and this alone accomplishes a realization that this music is not going to leave you unsatisfied. Rather, it is a mantra that will stay with you long after the album is done playing. This is a true sign of great music. Then, when the modern influence kicks in, the 4-minute R&B songs like "Kinder" and "Benoni" become the sweet-spots of the CD and the parts that I, personally, look most forward to. This CD has inspired me not only in my own musical endeavors, but also in my spiritual ones, and for that I am eternally grateful.
