notes

This debut release from 20 year-old Kacey Musgraves contains 10 original songs, including several penned with co-writer Miranda Lambert, and two covers. This CD was released in February 2007.
Kacey’s songwriting is to the point and from the heart. There is no shortage of attitude here, from the tongue-in-cheek humor of a redneck relationship gone bad in ”Nothing More” to the in your face declaration “You can stay here in Hell, I’m going back to Texas” of the first single, “Back to Texas.” Pedal steel and fiddle mix with gritty guitars to create a sound that is unmistakably Texas, making the song a natural choice for the first single. The two covers chosen to compliment the originals reveal some of the inspiration behind Kacey’s music: Neil Young’s “Heart of Gold”(featuring Kacey on harp) and The Byrd’s “You’re Still On My Mind” from the “Sweethearts of the Rodeo” album.
These songs serve notice that in the next generation of Texas music makers ready to rise up and be counted, one of them is a sassy brunette from East Texas with something to say.

BIO
Kacey Musgraves is a Texas-born singer/songwriter who has been quietly making herself known on the Texas music scene. One big step in her musical journey was appearing on the 5th season of the popular TV series "Nashville Star" in early 2007. She was selected as one of ten finalists out of over 20,000 vying for a spot on the show.
Kacey started playing music at age 9, performing western music and yodeling her way into appearances on The Today Show, Good Morning America and the 2002 Winter Olympics. Recording two award winning CDs in the yodeling/western music genre before graduating from high school convinced her to forego college and continue to pursue a career in music.
Kacey’s music blends elements of musical influences like Dolly Parton, Steve Earle, Tom Petty and Michelle Branch with a love for good ol' traditional country music. Kacey enjoys performing live and plays the guitar, mandolin and harmonica. Kacey is one of those performers who seem to make new friends - and fans - wherever she goes. She is a native East Texan and proud of it. Kacey enjoys outdoor activities like camping, hunting and fishing. She drives a 1967 Mustang with a 351 and enjoys leaving long black stripes on the road every now and then.

So very country! A good alternative to all these pop-country CDs out there! Kacey's voice just fits the songs so perfect not like many other new artist's.

  • Country the way it was meant to be sung

I buy a LOT of music by female country singers and this cd was one of the more pleasant surprises of the year. While many are morphing to a more pop/country sound, it's nice to hear someone who believes that country music is suppose to have a little twang, steel guitar and honky tonk piano. The ballards remind me of Loretta Lynn, Tammy Wynette and other traditional country ladies but there are rockers on this CD that will have you dancing in your seat (if not the street). Did I say I love this cd yet? Well I love this CD.

  • Thank you Texas, for giving country music another slice of heaven. . .

From the moment she hits the first note on her debut CD, Kacey Musgraves has your full attention. This is country music at its finest. Vocals that warble in that smooth southern style and that could only come out of an artist of this caliber. After writing music reviews for a number of years, this one was certainly a pleasure and one that will be on the list of my most memorable, right alongside George Strait, Kenny Rogers and Dolly Partons' early reviews. Thank you Texas, for giving country music another slice of heaven. Kacey Musgraves voice is absolutely golden. Absolutely five stars!

Kacey Musgraves will certainly become one of the best country singers of this next ten years. You can feel emotion and strength in her voice. Every song has a real charm. I can't stop listenning to this album !

“Kacey Musgraves’ self titled CD is good, too! I especially like her version of “Heart of Gold,” and “ You’re Still On My Mind” reminds me of early Lee Ann Womack! Awesome stuff!”

  • "Musgraves has a pretty solid album on her hands . . ."
    author: Gone Country Magazine

Kacey Musgraves, who came into our homes via Nashville Star this past season has just released her debut full length and I think a lot of folks may be surprised by it. . . There is a whole lot more Texas dancehall styled around the older country than I had expected, and it is rather refreshing to hear a young artist writing this way and pulling it off the way Musgraves has. For you fans of modern country don't worry, songs like "Halfway To Memphis," "Think Of Me," "Next Time," etc… will fulfill your every need. Musgraves has a pretty solid album on her hands that combines songs you will find on mainstream radio combined with songs where she shows her influence from the Texas dancehalls she grew up in. This is an artist to keep your eyes on, and I think it's pretty safe to say that we got it wrong this season with our Nashville Star voting when Kacey was shown the door.
