Record Review: "The Sweet Potato Queens' Big-Ass Box of Music"
Kacey Jones, "The Sweet Potato Queens' Big-Ass Box of Music" (Igo): Woman power? Yes. Politically correct? No. Funny? No again — try hilarious.
Kacey Jones always deftly mixes clever commentary with flat-out great sounds.
To hear it as background music, you'd think the 21 songs on the album were a top-shelf collection of blues, rock, country and jazz. But Jones can seriously sing while shooting from the hip — as well as below the belt.
Most songs have clear sexual overtones, and some would land an R rating, as Jones pokes fun at men, women, romance, breast implants and bubble baths.
Here's a song sample: "I Could Get Over Him (If I Could Get Under You)"; "Show Up Naked, Bring Beer," a slap at easily impressed guys; and "Well-Behaved Women Rarely Make History."
Jones first tickled funny bones with the Nashville cult group Ethel and the Shameless Hussies in the 1980s. She also produced Kinky Friedman, Willie Nelson, Lyle Lovett and Delbert McClinton before getting her inspiration for this album from friend Jill Conner Browne's best-selling "Sweet Potato Queen" book series.

Takes a lot from her earlier album and adds even MORE fun!

Kacey Jones' albums are simply some of the funniest stuff around now. This album takes several songs from her album "Never Wear Panties To A Party" and adds what basically amounts to a whole 'nother album worth of great material. Some of the funniest new songs include (but are not limited to) "How Do You Like These Babies Now?" and "Show Up Naked, Bring Beer!" as well as "Never Give 1em Any." All of which show not only how talented Kacey is as a singer and musician but also how deeply her sense of humor runs. All of Kacey Jones' CD's are must-haves. This one just as much as her others.

Kacey is already our very own Sweet Potato Queen, but here's her steel-guitar twanged, wanna-be song nonetheless. The entire CD is called The Sweet Potato Queens' Big-Ass Box of Music and it includes such fare as "Never Wear Panties to a Party," "Show Up Naked, Bring Beer" and "We All Need To Get Laid." I defy you not to smile. Co-writer Browne, by the way, is the author of the hugely popular Sweet Potato Queen books.

It’s getting to the point where it takes as long to say the title of a Kacey Jones CD as it does to listen to it. The latest offering from this humorous singer/songwriter is titled “The Sweet Potato Queens’ Big Ass Box Of Music,” and once again if you take it for what it’s worth and in the spirit that it was intended, it’s another real gem.
The content here is slightly off-color or even bawdy, but everything – the musicianship, production and writing – are all actually quite impressive. The styles used are vast ‘70s psychedelia to barroom blues.
The track that stands out the most here is "How Do You Like These Babies Now?," her take on a boob-job as revenge. Other selections that are a guaranteed grin include "We All Need To Get Laid," "Never Wear Panties To A Party" and "I Could Get Over Him (If I Could Get Under You)."
