Album Notes

The first word that springs to mind when you encounter Kala is passionate. This energetic, soulful singer was born and raised in the Midwest and from an early age she’s been singing, recording and performing. At the age of 18 she moved to the West Coast to pursue both a college degree and a music career. Kala has had multiple successes and opportunities in both recording and performing. Her adaptable voice has allowed her to sing a variety of styles from pop to Bossa Nova and everything in between. As diverse as her musical experiences have been, so to have her performance venues: from cafes, to small clubs, to arenas. Kala can also be heard on a variety of shows such as General Hospital and MADTV. In 2006, she toured the world with Brazilian legend, Sergio Mendes, as one of his featured female vocalists. She has also shared the stage with the likes of The Black-Eyed Peas, John Legend, Bobby Caldwell, Sandi Patti, Natalie Grant, Tommy Walker, Linda McCrary, & CeCe Winans.

Being heavily inspired by R&B, hip-hop, pop, and gospel music, she developed a love for anything that “grooved.” Some of her biggest influences are artists such as Lauryn Hill, Marc Broussard, Fred Hammond, Chaka Kahn, India Arie, & Stevie Wonder.

In 2005, Kala began working on a solo project that would last for over two years. Not only was it a journey of musical discovery, but of self-discovery. Through the process, her music came alive as she honed in on what she does best: soul, pop, and R&B. Likewise, she has developed an inner voice born out of difficultly, pain, questioning, and joy. Kala wrote her own lyrics from her own life experiences, which bring truth and life to her performances. Her heart and soul truly seep through every song on her self-titled debut album.
