Kaliband cooks up a sizzling musical pepper pot of rock, reggae, world beat, funk, and soul. This energizing, California-based fusion of the Caribbean, Africa, and Europe follows naturally since their influences are as varied as The Equals, The English Beat, Bob Marley & The Wailers, James Brown, Fela Kuti, and The Mighty Sparrow, among others.
Born and raised in Guyana (formerly British Guiana) before moving to the USA, bandleader and songwriter Son of an Oracle (Son or SOAO [so-ow] for short) takes his name in homage to his father, leader of one of Guyana's most famous vocal groups, The Oracles. The name Kaliband (Caliband in its previous incarnation) is also a fusion: Kali, a female avatar of Shiva, Lord of the dance, the rhythmic life cycle of creation and destruction; Caliban, the Afro-Caribbean slave from Shakespeare's The Tempest; California, where the band formed (members are products of CalArts's prestigious music program).
Released on the independent Sugarcane Records, Kaliband's debut CD "Son of an Oracle" is a stirring confluence of these elements. The intelligence in the songs' lyrics and the understated musical arrangement and production keep you interested by unfolding slowly, revealing more textures upon subsequent listens. Uplifting and upbeat, even through blistering social commentary on songs like "Free" and "Bond is My Word," "Son of an Oracle" foretells a bright future for Kaliband.

Amazing, Fabulous, and makes me feel Marvelous!

A must have for everyone ( I played it for my mother-and she has yet to give it back)! This group of artists just have a way with music; they are all so skilled and committed and while listening to the disc you can't help but feel such wonderful energy. I was trying to think of my favorite track but that's impossible because they are all SO great. One final thing..this album is ORIGINAL. In a day of covers and ridiculous sampling, it's refreshing to hear something new!
