Album Notes

Machinery of the Night is the followup to the critically acclaimed CD, Grey Matters which also featured the world class talents of Dave Liebman and Drew Gress. Again, the program is comprised of all original pieces penned by David Kane whose unique compositions are now beginning to be noticed by the Jazz world at large. Kane's music, while connected to the great Jazz Tradition, also looks forward and features sophisticated harmony, contrapuntal textures (as on "Fluffy") and unexpected twists and formal elisions. Even though Kane owes a debt of gratitude to Bill Evans, Keith Jarrett and Paul Bley among others, he has continued to develop his own voice and his playing alternates consonant lyricism with passages of percussive polytonality. Dave Liebman again proves why he is regarded as one the globe's greatest saxophonists (check his solo out the title track) and Drew Gress demonstrates both masterful technique, a big resonant sound and thoughtful creativity throughout. Also joining the quartet for the first time is the excellent drummer, Tony Martucci. The list of artists that Tony has played with reads like a whose Who's Who of modern Jazz; artists including Marc Copland, Gary Burton, Joe Henderson, Fred Hersch, Joe Lovano, James Moody, Joshua Redman, Sonny Stitt, and Kenny Werner.
