Album Notes

Over the past five years, Upper Hutt MC, producer, film-maker, independent businessman and all round Hip Hop advocate Kapabal has been working towards his sophomore solo album Before Now, the follow up to his 2002 debut release The Abal One.

Shaped over the course of four different versions, that were scrapped one after another in the pursuit of timeless music. Before Now finds Kapabal clearly articulating the steps and stages in his personal journey to do something positive with his life and create something positive for other people.

A journey that has taken him through friendships found and lost, brought him face to face with the aftermath of suicide, and taught him to work hard, focus on the good things in life, make the best of every situation and keep things moving forward.

In his words, “Hip Hop gave me direction, and developed me into who I am, developed me into a man. It gave me a voice to express my struggle, and everything on my mind. There are some things that I find hard to express in normal life, but through music I can pour my heart out.”

On Before Now, Kapabal shares production duties with Tyna, MaK NeO, Spectak, and more, orchestrating a booming, bass, synth and drum heavy sound.

In the booth, he splits vocal duties with Tyna, K-illa, Spectak, T.Mo, Pakkz, Tommy Ill, AL, Percieve & more
